The National Health Authority (NHA) and IIT Kanpur have signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost AI in healthcare under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). The agreement, inked in the presence of Union Health Secretary Mr. Apurva Chandra, marks a milestone in India's effort to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for enhancing healthcare outcomes.

The MoU was signed by Ms. L. S. Changsan, Additional Secretary at the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare & CEO of NHA, and Mr. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur. This partnership is poised to develop cutting-edge technologies to address some of the most pressing challenges in the Indian healthcare system.

Key AI Components to be Developed

Under this MoU, IIT Kanpur will develop several core AI components that will be pivotal in advancing healthcare initiatives under ABDM. These include:

Consent Management System: As data privacy is a major concern in healthcare, this system will offer a secure, transparent mechanism for obtaining patient consent for the use of their data in AI-based research and development.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Union Health Secretary Mr. Apurva Chandra lauded the collaboration, emphasizing the importance of such partnerships for improving healthcare outcomes in India. He highlighted how the development of a public benchmarking platform for AI models will address critical challenges, such as the availability and efficacy of disease diagnosis data.
