The North Odisha region is facing a flood-like situation following incessant rainfall triggered by a fresh low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system, which has intensified since the weekend, is expected to bring continuous rainfall until August 29, raising fears of further flooding in several districts.
The IMD has issued heavy to very heavy rainfall alerts for districts including Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, and Kendrapara, which are already witnessing swelling rivers and waterlogging in low-lying areas. With the fresh round of rain, rivers such as Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga, and Baitarani are flowing close to or above danger levels, increasing the risk of flash floods.
According to officials, the situation is being closely monitored by the Odisha Disaster Management Authority (ODMA), and district administrations have been asked to stay on high alert. Relief teams, boats, and evacuation shelters are being prepared to respond to emergencies. Farmers in the affected regions have expressed concern as standing paddy crops and seasonal vegetables are at risk of damage due to continuous submergence.
The IMD has warned that the low pressure system over the Bay of Bengal could further intensify, resulting in more widespread rainfall and gusty winds across coastal and interior Odisha. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, and ports in the State have been put on alert.
Experts say that Odisha is no stranger to heavy monsoon rains and low pressure systems originating in the Bay of Bengal. However, the increasing frequency of extreme rainfall events has made flood management more challenging. The State government has already begun preparations for rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts, keeping in mind the possibility of prolonged rainfall over the next few days.
In some districts, schools have been closed and road connectivity has been disrupted due to waterlogging and river overflows. Villagers in low-lying areas are being urged to move to higher ground, while emergency control rooms have been activated in the affected districts.
The North Odisha floods highlight the State’s recurring vulnerability to monsoon-driven disasters. While Odisha has improved its disaster response infrastructure over the past two decades, experts suggest that long-term solutions such as improved drainage, embankment strengthening, and climate-resilient agriculture are crucial to reducing the impact of such events.
With rainfall expected to continue till August 29, the State remains on high alert. Authorities are urging citizens to stay safe, follow official advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel in flood-prone areas. The coming days will be crucial in determining the severity of the flood situation in North Odisha.
