Authorities in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district have invoked the National Security Act (NSA), 1980, against two individuals for their alleged involvement in communal violence that broke out during celebrations of India’s ICC Champions Trophy victory in Mhow town. The clashes erupted on Sunday night after a victory rally was reportedly attacked with stones, leading to injuries, arson, and police intervention.

NSA Action Taken to Prevent Further Violence

To prevent further escalation of violence and maintain law and order, Indore Collector and District Magistrate Ashish Singh invoked NSA against the following individuals:

  • Sohail Qureshi (resident of Batkh Mohalla, Mhow)
  • Ejaz Khan (resident of Kanchan Vihar Khan Colony, Mhow)

The decision was based on a report submitted by the Superintendent of Police (Rural), Indore. Both accused reportedly have a history of criminal activities, including rioting, inciting communal tension, vandalism, and disturbing public order.

How the Violence Unfolded

Following India's Champions Trophy final victory, a motorcycle rally with the Indian national flag was held in Moti Mahal Square, Mhow. The rally, which included children and youth, was suddenly attacked with stones and bricks, leading to injuries and chaos.

According to police sources, the accused and their associates attempted to disrupt communal harmony by targeting the victory procession. The district administration stated that such acts posed a serious threat to public order, leading to the invocation of NSA against the two individuals.

Police Action and Security Measures

In response to the incident, the Indore police registered seven FIRs based on complaints from both affected groups. A total of 13 individuals have been arrested so far, as confirmed by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Nimish Agarwal.

Authorities have since increased security deployments across Mhow and nearby areas to prevent further tensions. Additional police and paramilitary forces have been stationed to ensure peace and order.

Current Situation and Future Actions

As of now, the situation in Mhow remains under control, though police continue to monitor the area for any signs of unrest. Officials have urged residents to maintain peace, and further investigations into the incident are ongoing. Additional arrests may follow based on further evidence and witness statements.
