Political tensions escalated in Odisha as two senior Congress leaders, Rama Chandra Kadam and Ashok Das, fell sick while staging a protest outside the Odisha Assembly on Saturday. The protest, which was held in front of Gate No. 3, was in response to the recent suspension of 14 Congress MLAs from the Assembly over charges of indiscipline.

Congress Leaders Denied Entry Into Assembly

The situation intensified when the protesting MLAs, including Kadam and Das, were denied entry into the Assembly premises. Kadam strongly objected to the move, stating that while they were aware of their suspension, they still had the right to enter the Assembly premises. He called the restriction illegal and undemocratic.

“We know that the Speaker has suspended us from the House. But, we have every right to enter the Assembly premises. However, they have denied entry to us which is illegal and undemocratic,” said Kadam.

Leaders Fall Sick Due to Intense Heat

The two Congress lawmakers sat on protest for nearly three hours under scorching heat before experiencing signs of dehydration. Medical personnel were called to the site, and both leaders were later shifted to Capital Hospital for further treatment.

A party official confirmed that the prolonged exposure to the heat took a toll on their health, requiring immediate medical attention.

Suspension of 14 Congress MLAs

The protest stemmed from the suspension of 14 Congress MLAs on March 25 and 26 after they created a ruckus in the Assembly. The MLAs were demanding the formation of a House Committee to investigate crimes against women reported in the last eight months.

Speaker Surama Padhy took action against the Congress legislators, leading to their suspension for seven days on charges of indiscipline. This move triggered strong opposition from the Congress party, which has been vocal about the state government’s handling of law and order issues.

Political Reactions and Aftermath

The Odisha Congress has condemned the suspension of its MLAs, calling it an attempt to suppress opposition voices in the Assembly. Party leaders have vowed to continue their protests against what they describe as a government crackdown on democracy.

The incident also highlights the increasing political friction in the state, especially ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Political analysts suggest that such tensions could shape voter sentiment in the coming months.

Rising Political Tensions in Odisha

This is not the first time the Odisha Assembly has witnessed heated confrontations between the ruling government and opposition parties. Similar suspensions and protests have taken place in the past, reflecting deep-rooted political disagreements.

With the Congress MLAs continuing their agitation, it remains to be seen whether the government will reconsider their demands or stick to its disciplinary action.
