  • Oil India successfully caps Kharsang Well 76 after the gas blowout of October 2025, executing a high risk operation with global experts, crisis teams and project specialists.

  • The damaged BOP was safely removed and a pre positioned capping stack was installed to redirect and contain the gas flow, ensuring complete control of the well.

  • Authorities, local administration and MoPNG played key roles in enabling quick, coordinated and safe execution of the well control operation in Arunachal Pradesh.

Oil India Limited has reached a significant milestone by successfully completing the safe capping operation of Well 76 at the Kharsang Oil Field located in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The well, identified as KSG 76, had experienced a gas blowout on 30 October 2025 during service operations, causing an uncontrolled and potentially dangerous release of gas. This incident required rapid, strategic and highly technical intervention from Oil India Limited, along with the support of global well control specialists and local operational teams.

The Kharsang Oil Field is operated by GeoEnpro Petroleum Limited, and the blowout incident immediately triggered a large scale emergency response. Oil India swiftly mobilised its Crisis Management Team, a specialised group trained to respond to complex well emergencies. The company also coordinated with experts from Cudd Well Control USA, a globally renowned organisation known for handling high risk well control operations. Their expertise was crucial in designing and implementing a highly technical plan that required precision, engineering strength and strict safety standards.

On 01 November 2025, Oil India’s teams took over the site operations and began preparing for one of the most complex tasks in well control engineering — the safe removal of the damaged Blowout Preventer, commonly known as the BOP. The BOP is a critical safety device designed to regulate pressure and prevent uncontrolled discharge of gas or oil. However, because the blowout had already damaged the equipment, its removal required careful planning, calculated movements and specialised machinery. The operation was executed under extremely challenging conditions, but the coordination between all stakeholders ensured safe progress.

Once the damaged BOP was successfully removed, the next crucial step involved installing a pre positioned capping stack. This capping stack had already been prepared and placed at the site in anticipation of the next stage of the control operation. The capping stack is a highly engineered piece of equipment designed to be mounted on the wellhead to redirect and control the release of gas. Its installation required perfect alignment, controlled pressure management and the technical expertise of engineers from Oil India, Cudd Well Control and GeoEnpro teams.

The team carefully installed the capping stack onto the wellhead. Once secured, the equipment successfully redirected the gas flow to the top of the stack, ensuring controlled and safe containment. With the capping stack firmly in place, the valves on the stack were used to stop the gas discharge, ensuring complete control over Well KSG 76. This marked the most critical and successful part of the operation, restoring safety to the site and eliminating the immediate environmental and operational risk.

This achievement stands as a clear indication of OIL’s engineering capability, detailed planning processes and effective emergency response systems. At every step, teams worked under hazardous conditions with a clear focus on safety, accuracy and speed. The successful completion of the operation also highlights the importance of collaboration between local teams, global experts, district authorities and state government support mechanisms.

Oil India has openly acknowledged the hard work, resilience and determination of all involved. The company has recognised the exceptional contribution of its Crisis Management Team, the experts from Cudd Well Control USA, the technical and operational teams from GeoEnpro Petroleum Limited, and the on ground field teams who worked continuously under pressure. Their coordinated effort played a key role in enabling the timely stabilisation of the situation.

Along with corporate and technical teams, the District Administration and State Government of Arunachal Pradesh played an important part in facilitating the operation. The company also acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), which ensured smooth coordination and provided institutional backing where required. The role of the local community is also significant, as their cooperation helped maintain a safe and controlled environment during the high risk operation.

Oil India Limited has reiterated its commitment to maintaining safe, sustainable and efficient operations in all its project areas. The company continues to invest in advanced equipment, global partnerships and skilled manpower to ensure readiness for handling incidents of this scale. The safe capping of Well 76 is a clear reflection of the company’s capability to manage even the most complex and high pressure challenges in the oil and gas sector.
