Onam festivities underline Kerala’s unique blend of cultural richness and secular harmony.
The Athachamayam procession, held annually in Thripunithura, near Kochi, heralded the beginning of Onam celebrations in Kerala. Onam, the State’s most important cultural festival, is not only an occasion for joy and festivity but also a reflection of Kerala’s enduring traditions of unity, diversity and secular spirit.
The Atham day marks the start of the 10-day-long Onam festivities that culminate in Thiruvonam, the most significant day of the festival. The procession in Thripunithura has grown over the years into one of the most awaited events in Kerala’s cultural calendar.
This year’s Athachamayam 2025 blended artistic fervour with social awareness messages. The streets came alive with folk performances, including Theyyam, Pulikali, Panchavadyam, Chenda Melam and Kathakali, showcasing the wide spectrum of Kerala’s art forms. Floats representing themes of environmental protection, women’s empowerment, communal harmony and health awareness marched alongside traditional displays.
The significance of the Athachamayam lies not only in its grandeur but also in its roots. Historically, it was associated with the Maharaja of Kochi, who would participate in the procession to mark the beginning of Onam festivities. Over time, it evolved into a public celebration of secularism, drawing together people of all communities and backgrounds.
The procession’s inclusive spirit reflects the very essence of Onam, which is celebrated by Malayalis across religions and regions. Beyond being a harvest festival, Onam has come to symbolise the legend of Mahabali, the benevolent king whose reign epitomised equality, justice and prosperity.
In today’s context, the Athachamayam continues to be more than just a cultural spectacle. It is also a platform where artists, students, cultural organisations and social groups converge to spread awareness about contemporary issues. This year, messages on sustainable living, drug abuse prevention, digital literacy and climate change were prominently showcased.
The streets of Thripunithura were packed with locals and tourists alike, underlining the growing recognition of Onam as a global cultural event. Kerala Tourism has actively promoted Onam festivities, and Athachamayam has become a highlight for visitors eager to witness Kerala’s cultural richness firsthand.
For the people of Kerala, Onam is a time of family gatherings, traditional feasts (Onasadya), games (Onakalikal), Pookalam (floral designs), Vallamkali (snake boat races), and Pulikali (tiger dance). Athachamayam is the grand curtain-raiser that sets the festive spirit in motion.
This year’s celebration, much like the legend of King Mahabali, was a reminder that the essence of Onam is not only in cultural performances but also in spreading values of inclusivity, compassion and collective joy.
Thus, the Atham pageantry of 2025 was not just a colourful cultural display, but also a living example of Kerala’s secular spirit and social consciousness, making Onam a festival of universal relevance and timeless appeal.
