In a robust push towards eradicating Naxalism by 2026, the Indian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, has significantly intensified its operations against Naxalite groups. This initiative, dubbed Operation Kagar, aims to tackle the longstanding issue of Naxalism through a comprehensive strategy that combines security measures with developmental initiatives.

Recently, security forces in Chhattisgarh successfully neutralized 31 Naxalites, a crucial operation that underscores the government’s commitment to this cause. This operation is part of a broader strategy that was discussed in a recent meeting involving chief ministers from eight Naxal-affected states. The collaborative effort seeks to integrate Naxal-hit regions into the mainstream economy, thereby addressing the root causes of insurgency.

Since the beginning of the year, the government’s efforts have led to the killing of approximately 194 Naxalites, with 801 arrests and 742 surrenders reported. These figures highlight the intensity and effectiveness of the security operations being carried out across the affected regions.

Operation Kagar emphasizes significant infrastructure development, aiming to enhance connectivity and access to basic services in remote areas. Furthermore, community empowerment and welfare schemes are integral components of the strategy, designed to foster peace and development in regions previously marred by violence. Home Minister Shah noted a substantial reduction in violent incidents, reporting a decrease from 16,463 to 7,700 incidents, attributing this decline to effective coordination between the central and state governments.

The Indian government’s approach to eradicating Naxalism represents a multi-faceted effort that seeks not only to combat the immediate threats posed by insurgents but also to address the socio-economic factors that contribute to the perpetuation of Naxalism. By prioritizing development alongside security measures, the government aims to create sustainable peace in affected areas.
