  • Operation Sindoor executed in 23 minutes with successful jamming of Pakistan’s Chinese air defence systems

  • IAF targeted key Pakistani airbases and neutralised HQ-9 and HQ-16 missile systems using indigenous and Russian technology

  • The operation highlighted India’s defence self-reliance and exposed Pakistan’s reliance on foreign weaponry

In a remarkable display of military technology and precision, the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully completed Operation Sindoor within 23 minutes, effectively bypassing and jamming Pakistan’s advanced Chinese-supplied air defence systems, official documents revealed.

Background and Execution

Launched on the morning of May 8, 2025, Operation Sindoor was a calibrated military response to a series of escalating asymmetric warfare tactics, including coordinated drone and missile attacks by Pakistan on Indian cities such as Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, and Bhuj on the night of May 7-8.

India’s Integrated Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Grid and layered air defence mechanisms intercepted the initial threats with radars, missile batteries, and electronic countermeasures, setting the stage for the retaliatory air strikes.

The operation targeted critical Pakistani air defence radars and military installations, particularly near Lahore and key airbases including Noor Khan and Rahimyar Khan. The mission was executed with surgical precision, neutralising multiple Chinese-origin HQ-9 and HQ-16 surface-to-air missile systems.

Advanced Technologies and Indigenous Strength

The IAF combined indigenous defence technology and foreign systems in its offensive. The Akash missile system, Barak-8, and the Russian-made S-400 (Sudarshan Chakra) played vital roles alongside electronic warfare tactics to jam and bypass enemy radars. Older systems like Pechora, OSA-AK, and LLAD guns were also deployed with notable effectiveness.

The success of Operation Sindoor underlines India’s growing strength as a defence manufacturing hub, driven by the Make in India initiative. Indigenous defence production hit a record ₹1.27 lakh crore in FY 2023-24, with exports increasing dramatically to ₹23,622 crore in FY 2024-25, a 34-fold jump since 2013-14.
