Operation Sindoor, launched in the early hours of May 7, 2025, marked a significant retaliatory move by the Indian Armed Forces targeting nine key terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This high-level precision strike followed the barbaric terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which left 26 civilians dead, including 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen. The strikes were meticulously executed by a joint force consisting of the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy, showcasing an advanced level of inter-service coordination and intelligence-led warfare.
Strategic Targets and Execution
The core objective of Operation Sindoor was to dismantle the operational capabilities of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)—two major terrorist outfits believed to be responsible for orchestrating cross-border attacks on Indian soil. According to a top source in the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force led the strikes on Bahawalpur and Muridke, while the Army conducted parallel ground operations. The Indian Navy contributed surveillance and targeting intelligence using P8I aircraft and MQ9 Predator drones.
Technological Edge and Planning
Intelligence inputs for the operation were compiled by R&AW (Research and Analysis Wing), which developed a comprehensive “Target Folder” for each terror site. This folder was based on satellite imagery, human intelligence, and technical surveillance. Targets were selected with strategic precision—avoiding civilian and military establishments to prevent escalation. The strikes reportedly involved fighter jets, UCAVs, missiles, and rockets, with air defence systems deployed along the LoC and IB as a precautionary measure against retaliation.
Airbases and Educational Institutions on Alert
In the wake of the operation, multiple airbases across Punjab and Haryana, including the Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in Chandigarh, were placed on high alert. All commercial flights were suspended until 12 noon. Additionally, due to the heightened threat perception in border areas, schools and colleges in Pathankot, Amritsar, and Ferozepur were ordered to remain closed for three days by the respective District Commissioners.
The Pathankot district administration issued an emergency closure order citing potential security threats, while the Ferozepur and Amritsar administrations followed suit. A mock drill was scheduled for the evening in several sensitive areas to test emergency response capabilities.
Official Statement from the Ministry of Defence
A statement released by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed that India had carried out a "focused, measured, and non-escalatory operation". According to the MoD, no Pakistani military installations were targeted, reflecting India’s intent to neutralise terrorism without provoking a broader military conflict.
“We have exercised restraint in our choice of targets. The goal was to destroy infrastructure directly linked to terror activities against India,” the ministry stated. It reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring accountability for the Pahalgam massacre, adding that further actions would depend on the regional security situation and Pakistan's response.
Pakistan's Reaction
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif responded strongly, labeling the Indian strikes an “act of war.” In a televised address, Sharif stated that Pakistan reserves the right to "give a befitting reply" and accused India of trying to destabilize the region. He claimed that Pakistan’s armed forces were prepared to retaliate and “defend the nation's sovereignty.”
"Pakistan has every right to give a befitting reply to this act of war imposed by India, and a strong response is indeed being given," said Sharif, further accusing India of “nefarious objectives.”
Security Status at Borders
Despite the escalated tension, civilian movement remained normal at the Attari-Wagah border, although the Border Security Force (BSF) and Indian Army were on heightened alert, closely monitoring cross-border movements. Enhanced patrolling and aerial surveillance are being conducted around Punjab’s international border areas to preempt any countermeasures from across the border.
Public Response and Media Coverage
The Indian public has reacted with a mix of relief and anxiety. Social media saw hashtags like #OperationSindoor, #PahalgamRevenge, and #IndianForces trend nationwide. While many lauded the Indian government for taking a decisive stance against terrorism, there is a growing concern about potential escalation into a full-scale conflict.
Television media covered visuals of fighter jets taking off, security forces in deployment, and school gates shut across Punjab. Officials have urged the public not to panic and to follow advisories issued by local authorities.
Geopolitical Implications
Strategic analysts believe that Operation Sindoor sends a clear message to state-sponsored terror outfits operating within Pakistan, as well as to the global community about India’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. However, this also places diplomatic pressure on India’s relations with neighbouring countries and international organisations that might call for restraint and dialogue.
While the United Nations has not yet issued a formal statement, some global powers are expected to respond in the coming days, potentially urging both nations to exercise caution and avoid escalation.
Conclusion
Operation Sindoor marks a turning point in India’s counter-terrorism strategy, showcasing a multi-domain, precision strike capability. By choosing targets strategically and avoiding escalation, India has delivered a strong message against cross-border terrorism, without breaching international norms.
As the situation develops, all eyes remain on Pakistan’s response, India’s internal security arrangements, and whether this action leads to long-term deterrence or further tensions in the subcontinent.
