On 26 November 2024, Constitution Day was marked by a controversy in Parliament over the list of speakers for the joint sitting of both Houses. Opposition Leaders’ Demand for Inclusion The dispute began when leaders from the INDIA bloc, the coalition of opposition parties, wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging that Leaders of Opposition (LoPs) in both Houses of Parliament be allowed to speak at the event. The letter stated that, in keeping with the best traditions of Parliamentary democracy, it was essential that Opposition leaders be given a chance to address the function. The event was to be addressed by President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to the schedule.

The letter emphasized that the function would be a historic occasion, marking the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1949 by the Constituent Assembly. While acknowledging the presence of senior government leaders, the opposition urged that their inclusion would underscore the spirit of democracy and representation in Parliament.

Government’s Clarification In response, Kiren Rijiju, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, criticized the Opposition for reacting without fully understanding the event's arrangements. Rijiju clarified that the Prime Minister Modi would not be speaking at the function, further diffusing the opposition’s concern regarding his address. According to the official schedule, Speaker Om Birla will deliver the welcome speech, followed by Vice President Dhankhar’s address and a speech by President Murmu.

Symbolic Celebrations and Releases The Constitution Day celebrations also included the release of a commemorative coin, a stamp, and three books on the Constitution to mark this important milestone in India's democratic history. These symbolic acts of commemoration were meant to highlight the significance of the Constitution and its journey since it took effect on January 26, 1950, turning India into a republic.

This day marks the momentous decision by the Constituent Assembly of India to adopt the Constitution on November 26, 1949, before it came into force on Republic Day, January 26, 1950.
