A Joint Action Committee (JAC) meeting on delimitation convened by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin is currently underway in Chennai, with several key opposition leaders in attendance. The meeting, set to continue until 12:30 PM, has brought together prominent figures from across India to discuss matters related to delimitation and its implications for the federal structure of the country. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar were among the key leaders welcomed by CM Stalin.

While West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her support for the meeting through a letter, citing prior commitments, the BJP has staged black flag protests across Tamil Nadu, alleging that the delimitation meeting is a diversion from alleged corruption within the DMK government. The BJP claims that this meeting is an attempt to distract from the state's governance issues, including unresolved matters with neighboring states such as the Mullaperiyar Dam dispute with Kerala and disagreements over the Metro line towards Hosur with Karnataka.

The delimitation exercise, which determines the boundaries and representation of constituencies in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, is seen by some opposition leaders as a necessary step to safeguard the federal structure of the country, ensuring equitable representation for all states. Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin took to social media before the meeting, stating, "Today will be etched in history as the day when states that have contributed to our nation’s development came together to safeguard its federal structure by ensuring #FairDelimitation."

The JAC meeting is expected to pass a joint resolution with a sub-committee being formed to organize similar consultations in other parts of the country. A joint press conference will follow the discussions at 12:30 PM.

In a separate development, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging that the delimitation exercise should be conducted in such a way that no state faces a reduction in its representation in the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha.

The BJP's protests highlight the ongoing tension between the ruling party and opposition leaders, as the delimitation meeting takes place in a politically charged atmosphere, with state-level issues and broader national concerns at stake.

As the meeting progresses, the outcome of the discussions and the resolutions passed may significantly impact future political dynamics and the federal balance in India.
