In a rare show of political unity, opposition parties across India have rallied behind the Indian Army's Operation Sindoor. This military operation, which involved precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), was launched in response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 civilians on April 22, 2025. The attack had been orchestrated by terrorists based in Pakistan, and the Indian Army’s action sought to neutralize these threats to national security.
Opposition's Unified Support for Operation Sindoor
Leaders from a wide spectrum of Indian political parties, including the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and regional parties, expressed unwavering support for the Army’s action. The strikes were praised for being measured, precise, and aimed at neutralizing high-ranking operatives from terrorist organizations like Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), both notorious for their operations against India.
Key Reactions from Opposition Leaders
Congress:
The principal opposition party, Congress, strongly backed the operation, emphasizing national unity in times of crisis. Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, expressed his pride in the Armed Forces, tweeting:
"Proud of our Armed Forces. Jai Hind!"
Shashi Tharoor, senior Congress leader, called the operation a fitting response, highlighting that the nation must stand united against terrorism. Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress president, reiterated the party’s full support for the government’s actions, affirming India’s commitment to combating terrorism emanating from Pakistan and PoJK.
Pawan Khera, a senior Congress spokesperson, said, "We are proud of our Army. If someone threatens Indian citizens, they will meet the same fate. Our Army has proven that again."
Shiv Sena (UBT):
Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) also voiced support, saluting the bravery of Indian soldiers in a post on their official social media handle, stating: "Salute to the bravery of Indian soldiers!"
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP):
Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Chief Minister and leader of AAP, joined the chorus of support, saying, "We are proud of the Indian Army and our brave soldiers. 140 crore Indians stand with the Indian Army in this fight against terrorism."
Atishi, Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, also congratulated the Indian Army, stating, "The entire country stands with the Indian Army in this fight against terrorism."
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) & Other Regional Parties:
Supriya Sule, NCP-SCP MP, applauded the operation for its measured action against terrorist groups. She emphasized that the operation was not aimed at any civilian population or country but rather against terrorism.
In Andhra Pradesh, both N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister, and Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the opposition leader, expressed their support for the Indian Army’s action. Naidu reposted the Army’s message with the slogan “Jai Hind”, while Reddy referred to the strikes as a "decisive response" showing India's strength and commitment to national sovereignty.
In Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, RJD leader, and Vijay Kumar Sinha, Bihar Deputy CM, also supported the strikes, emphasizing India’s right to retaliate against attacks on its sovereignty. Sinha particularly praised the strikes for hitting nine terror hideouts and affirmed that Pakistan-backed terrorism would no longer be tolerated.
Operation Sindoor: A Measured Response
Operation Sindoor targeted nine terror sites in Pakistan and PoJK, specifically aiming at JeM and LeT operatives involved in planning cross-border attacks. The operation was non-escalatory—no Pakistani military installations were hit—and was carried out with precision to ensure that the strikes would effectively neutralize the leadership of these terror groups.
The Indian Ministry of Defence emphasized that the operation was a calibrated response to the Pahalgam terror attack, making it clear that while India showed restraint, the action sent a firm message about accountability and deterrence against cross-border terrorism.
The Political Significance
The opposition's support for Operation Sindoor marked a rare instance of political unity across party lines on matters of national security. In the wake of such a grave attack on Indian civilians, political leaders have called for unity to back the Armed Forces and the government's stance on countering terrorism.
Conclusion
With support pouring in from all corners of the country, Operation Sindoor has not only highlighted India's resolve to protect its citizens but also sent a strong message to Pakistan that it will be held accountable for harboring and supporting terrorist activities. The opposition parties’ backing of the Indian Armed Forces during this operation signifies the country’s collective determination to fight terrorism and uphold national security.
