The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme has gained remarkable traction since its launch on October 3, attracting over 155,000 candidates within just two weeks. This enthusiastic response has exceeded expectations, prompting policymakers to anticipate a shortlist of 100,000 candidates for internships by December. With the goal of providing 10 million internships over the next five years, this initiative seeks to connect young Indians with real-world experiences in some of the country's top 500 companies.
The internship program, which is operated through a web portal managed by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, has already identified 80,000 internship opportunities across 24 sectors from around 200 companies. Renowned companies such as Jubilant Foodworks, Eicher Motor Ltd, Larsen & Toubro Ltd, Tech Mahindra, and Bajaj Finance have partnered in offering internships. This wide array of options ensures that candidates can gain exposure in various fields, including oil and gas, banking, automotive, infrastructure, and manufacturing.
Interns aged 21 to 24 years will not only have the chance to immerse themselves in real-life business environments, but they will also receive financial support. The government provides a monthly stipend of ₹4,500, with an additional ₹500 contributed by the companies. A one-time grant of ₹6,000 will further assist interns, while insurance coverage will be ensured under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.
This scheme reflects the government's commitment to fostering a public-private partnership model that facilitates youth employment and skill development. It aims to address the ongoing challenges of job creation in the Indian economy, particularly in light of the growing working-age population. By connecting talented youth with businesses seeking fresh talent, the scheme supports both the personal growth of individuals and the needs of companies in various sectors.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) have collaborated with the government to enhance this internship initiative, ensuring it serves as a bridge between youth and employment opportunities. This partnership signifies a strategic approach to tackling youth unemployment and aligning educational outcomes with industry requirements.
As the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme continues to evolve, it is evident that this program will play a crucial role in shaping the future of young professionals in India. With opportunities available across 737 districts, aspiring interns can explore various career paths and gain invaluable experience in their chosen fields. The success of this initiative will not only empower individuals but will also strengthen the Indian economy as a whole.
