Owaisi stresses India’s strategic partnership with the US and urges the issue be raised at the highest level.
Asaduddin Owaisi, Member of Parliament and leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has sharply criticised the remarks made by Pakistan Army chief General Asim Munir during his recent visit to the United States. Speaking to the media, Owaisi said that such comments, made on American soil, were a direct attempt to malign India and its global image.
According to Owaisi, India’s strategic partnership with the United States is a vital pillar of its foreign policy. He argued that any attempt by Pakistan to exploit American platforms for anti-India rhetoric should be countered with strong political and diplomatic measures.
Owaisi stated, “This misuse of American soil is unacceptable to India and Indians. The Modi government must take a firm political position and ensure the issue is raised strongly with the US administration.”
The controversy emerged after reports surfaced that General Asim Munir made statements during closed-door interactions in the US that were perceived as provocative and critical towards India. While official transcripts have not been made public, multiple diplomatic sources indicated that the remarks could impact the already tense India–Pakistan relations.
Owaisi emphasised that a passive response from the Indian government would send the wrong signal to both domestic and international observers. He urged the Ministry of External Affairs to lodge a formal protest and seek clarifications from the US regarding the platform given for such remarks.
Historically, India and Pakistan have clashed over the interpretation of strategic and security issues, particularly regarding Kashmir, cross-border terrorism, and diplomatic narratives on global platforms. Owaisi’s intervention comes at a time when diplomatic sensitivities are heightened, especially with India preparing for key bilateral engagements with the US later this month.
The AIMIM leader also called on other political parties to unite on foreign policy matters when national interest is at stake. “Differences in domestic politics should not prevent us from presenting a strong united front internationally,” he added.
Observers believe that the government’s next move will be closely watched, both in Washington and Islamabad. If New Delhi chooses to publicly confront the remarks, it could signal a tougher diplomatic posture ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming foreign engagements.
Given the fragile state of South Asian geopolitics, this development may also influence regional stability, trade relations, and security cooperation frameworks. Experts caution that mismanagement of such diplomatic flashpoints can escalate tensions, potentially affecting India’s economic and security priorities.
For now, the ball is in the Modi government’s court to decide whether to issue a formal statement, summon the Pakistani envoy, or engage in backchannel diplomacy to register India’s displeasure.
