What's covered under the Article:

  • 537 Pakistani nationals departed India after the exit deadline ended on April 27, 2025, following the Pahalgam attack.

  • The 'Leave India' notice was issued after a deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, with 26 tourists killed.

  • The deadline for Pakistani nationals with short-term visas has now passed, with only medical visa holders allowed to stay until April 29.

In a significant development following the brutal Pahalgam terror attack, 537 Pakistani nationals, including nine diplomats and officials, left India through the Attari-Wagah border between April 24 and 27, 2025. This mass departure marks the end of the exit deadline for short-term visa holders from Pakistan, which followed the terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 individuals, mostly tourists, were killed.

The Pahalgam attack has severely strained relations between India and Pakistan, with New Delhi taking swift diplomatic measures, including ordering the exit of Pakistanis holding various types of short-term visas. This decision also resulted in reciprocal actions from Pakistan, worsening the already fragile ties between the two nations.

Among the 537 Pakistanis who left, the majority were on short-term visas such as business, tourism, and medical visas. The government of India issued a 'Leave India' notice to all Pakistani nationals with short-term visas, a measure that saw the departure of hundreds in a span of four days. Meanwhile, a total of 850 Indian nationals also crossed back into India from Pakistan during this period.

The Attari-Wagah border saw long queues of vehicles, with Pakistani nationals hurrying to leave before the deadline expired. Among the returning citizens, some shared emotional farewells, with families separated by the tense political atmosphere. For instance, Sarita, a Pakistani national who came to India for her relative's wedding, was unable to leave with her Indian mother due to the restrictions.

The exit deadline for Pakistani nationals with SAARC visas ended on April 26, while those with medical visas have until April 29 to leave. In addition to the Attari-Wagah border, some Pakistani nationals may have taken alternative routes through airports, as India does not have direct air connectivity with Pakistan.

Meanwhile, across India, various state governments ensured that Pakistani nationals complied with the deadline. The states of Maharashtra, Bihar, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, and others reported successful deportations, with state police forces working alongside federal authorities to manage the process.

At the Attari border, the atmosphere was tense yet orderly, with Pakistani nationals returning home and Indian nationals returning after the diplomatic dispute. The Indian government had previously declared the three Defence/Military, Naval, and Air Advisors from the Pakistani High Commission as Persona Non Grata on April 23, giving them a one-week deadline to vacate India. In a tit-for-tat move, Pakistan also withdrew its defence attaché from Islamabad.

India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan were actively involved in coordinating efforts to ensure that no Pakistani nationals overstayed the exit deadline. The situation at the Attari-Wagah border epitomized the current climate of heightened India-Pakistan tensions, and as the last of the Pakistani nationals left the country, the diplomatic fallout from the Pahalgam attack appeared to be far from over.

The Pahalgam attack, which had already resulted in significant loss of life, remains a focal point in the diplomatic measures taken by the Indian government. The aftermath of this tragic event, coupled with the visa revocations, represents an escalation in the already tense relations between India and Pakistan. The situation continues to evolve, and the next steps from both nations remain closely watched by international observers.
