Following India's strikes, Pakistan announces a 48-hour airspace closure and vows retaliation for loss of lives in military strikes.
In a shocking display of support for terrorists, videos that have gone viral on social media show the Pakistan Army and members of the Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD) attending the funeral of terrorists eliminated in India’s Operation Sindoor. This action comes after India targeted terrorist infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) as part of a non-escalatory strike aimed at countering terrorism.
Pakistan Army and JuD at the Funeral
The funeral prayer was conducted for Qari Abdul Malik, Khalid, and Mudassir, all of whom are believed to have been members of the Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD), a banned terror group led by Hafiz Saeed. The ceremony took place in Muridke, where high security was deployed. Tabish Qayyum, spokesperson for the Pakistan Markazi Muslim League, the political arm of JuD, confirmed the participation of both Pakistan Army personnel and JuD members at the funeral.
The funeral prayer was led by Hafiz Abdul Rauf, with prayers offered for the safety and security of Pakistan. Qayyum also revealed that Malik, Khalid, and Mudassir were mosque caretakers and prayer leaders, roles that have raised suspicions about their exact affiliations. After the funeral, the bodies of the terrorists were sent to their native areas for burial.
The fact that the bodies were draped in the Pakistani flag has sparked serious concerns and questions regarding Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism. The participation of the Pakistan Army and JuD at the funeral raises a significant red flag, especially considering India’s claims about Pakistan’s support for terrorist organizations operating in the region.
Pakistan’s Response to India’s Military Strike
Following India’s Operation Sindoor, which targeted nine terrorist sites across Pakistan and PoJK, Pakistan’s National Security Council (NSC) convened a meeting under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During this meeting, the Pakistani armed forces were given a clear mandate to retaliate against the strikes, stating that the country’s military would decide the time, place, and manner of the retaliation.
The meeting, attended by Pakistan’s services chiefs, cabinet ministers, and senior officers, underscored Pakistan’s intention to avenge the loss of innocent Pakistani lives in India’s military strikes. This rhetoric reflects the growing tensions between the two nations, with each side maintaining its stance on border security and terrorism.
Closure of Pakistan's Airspace
In a retaliatory move, Pakistan closed its airspace for 48 hours. The closure began shortly after the Indian military strike, with aviation authorities shutting down air traffic over Islamabad and Lahore, rerouting flights to Karachi. The airspace was fully closed as a precautionary measure against potential further military actions from India.
The airspace closure adds to the heightened tensions between the two countries, with both sides continuing to engage in rhetoric and military maneuvers. Pakistan’s airspace closure further escalates the situation, with many questioning whether this is a prelude to further military actions or if it is simply a defensive measure.
The Growing Debate Over Pakistan's Stance on Terrorism
The events surrounding the funeral of the terrorists and the involvement of the Pakistan Army and JuD have intensified the debate about Pakistan’s stance on terrorism. While Pakistan has publicly condemned terrorism in the past, its support for certain groups, as evidenced by the attendance of Pakistan Army personnel at the funeral of JuD members, raises doubts about the country’s commitment to combating terrorism on its soil.
India’s Operation Sindoor is seen as a strong message that India is committed to taking decisive action against terrorists operating from Pakistani soil, while also maintaining a non-escalatory stance. However, Pakistan’s responses, both in terms of military retaliation and support for banned terror groups, continue to challenge the peaceful resolution of issues between the two nations.
The Bigger Picture
The ongoing conflict and military tensions between India and Pakistan underscore the fragility of the region’s security dynamics. As both countries engage in actions that could further escalate tensions, it is clear that achieving a long-lasting peace in the region will require both sides to reevaluate their approach to counter-terrorism efforts and border security.
