ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – July 4, 2025:
The Pakistan Army announced Friday it had killed 30 militants attempting to cross the border from Afghanistan into North Waziristan over the past three days, in what it described as a major counter-infiltration operation following last week’s deadly suicide attack that killed 16 soldiers.
According to the military’s statement, the militants were members of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistan Taliban, and its affiliated factions. The army claimed the infiltrators were receiving support from India, Pakistan’s longtime rival, though it did not provide evidence for the accusation.
“The security forces demonstrated exceptional professionalism, vigilance, and preparedness, and prevented a potential catastrophe,” the statement said.
Large caches of weapons, ammunition, and explosives were reportedly recovered during the operations.
The killings occurred in North Waziristan, a rugged tribal district bordering Afghanistan that has been a frequent flashpoint for insurgent violence. Last week’s suicide bombing targeting military personnel in the same area was claimed by a TTP faction, underscoring the group’s continued threat despite years of military offensives.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the army’s actions.
“We are determined to completely eliminate all forms of terrorism from the country,” the Prime Minister’s office said in a statement Friday.
The fresh border violence has highlighted Pakistan’s ongoing security challenges as well as the fragile relationship with Afghanistan’s Taliban government, which Islamabad has repeatedly accused of harboring TTP fighters.
The Pakistani military did not specify whether the militants crossed from areas under Afghan Taliban control but implied that Afghanistan’s territory was being used as a staging ground.
Pakistan and India have routinely exchanged allegations of supporting militants against each other, a longstanding point of tension between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
The army said the operation is part of a broader effort to prevent cross-border infiltration and secure the region after recent attacks. Security has been tightened further along the porous border.
The incident comes at a time of renewed debate over Pakistan’s internal counterterror strategy and relations with Kabul, as sporadic attacks by the TTP have increased in recent months.
