  • Pakistan FM Ishaq Dar arrives in Dhaka for a two-day official visit, a rare move in bilateral ties.

  • He will meet Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and other senior leaders for talks.

  • Visit expected to focus on strengthening diplomatic relations, trade, and regional cooperation.

In a rare diplomatic outreach, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has arrived in Dhaka, Bangladesh on a two-day visit, underscoring a possible thaw in ties between the two South Asian nations. This is one of the few high-level visits by a Pakistani leader to Bangladesh in recent years, making it a significant event in the regional diplomatic landscape.

According to official sources, during his stay, Dar is scheduled to meet Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, who assumed leadership following the recent political transition in the country. He will also engage in talks with other senior leaders and policymakers, with discussions expected to cover a wide range of issues, including bilateral trade, regional security, and cultural exchanges.

The visit comes at a time when South Asia is witnessing rapid political and economic changes. Both Pakistan and Bangladesh, despite their shared history and cultural ties, have experienced strained relations since the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Although there have been sporadic efforts to improve diplomatic relations, high-level visits between the two countries remain rare.

By sending its Foreign Minister to Dhaka, Islamabad is signaling a willingness to revive dialogue with Bangladesh, which has been cautious in its approach towards Pakistan. Analysts believe that Dar’s visit could open doors to resetting the relationship, particularly in areas such as economic cooperation, trade expansion, and collaboration in multilateral forums like SAARC and OIC.

The visit also has a symbolic dimension. Ishaq Dar, a senior politician with deep ties to Pakistan’s ruling establishment, represents continuity in Islamabad’s efforts to engage constructively with neighbors. His outreach to Dhaka is being seen as part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to diversify its diplomatic partnerships in South Asia, especially as regional geopolitics undergo transformation with India’s growing influence and China’s expanding footprint.

Bangladesh, under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus, is also in a transitional phase and is likely to assess Pakistan’s overture through the lens of its domestic priorities and international alignments. While the visit may not result in any immediate breakthrough agreements, it is expected to set the stage for renewed dialogue between the two nations.

Observers note that economic cooperation could be the most practical avenue for collaboration, as both countries face similar developmental challenges and have complementary markets. Trade has remained minimal due to political sensitivities, but with shifting global supply chains, there is an opportunity for reviving economic engagement.

In addition, discussions on regional security and counter-terrorism cooperation are likely, given the shared concerns of both nations. While political trust-building may take time, such cooperative measures could pave the way for more sustained dialogue.

The visit is also closely watched internationally, as it reflects the evolving dynamics of South Asian diplomacy. For Dhaka, maintaining balanced relations with all regional players—including Pakistan—offers strategic leverage, while for Islamabad, strengthening ties with Bangladesh would broaden its diplomatic reach in the subcontinent.

As Ishaq Dar begins his two-day trip, expectations remain measured, but the very fact of this visit marks a significant diplomatic gesture. Whether it leads to a genuine reset in relations or remains symbolic will depend on how both sides follow up in the coming months.
