A Sacred Journey: Indian Pilgrims Head to Shadani Darbar
In a significant move towards fostering religious and cultural ties, Pakistan has granted 94 visas to Indian Hindu pilgrims to participate in the 316th birth anniversary celebrations of Shiv Avtari Satguru Sant Shadaram Sahib. This pilgrimage, set to take place at Shadani Darbar in Sindh from January 5-15, 2025, is part of the Pakistan-India Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines of 1974.

The Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi announced the issuance of these visas and extended wishes for a fulfilling journey. Pakistan’s Charge d’Affairs, Saad Ahmad Warraich, reiterated his country’s commitment to preserving sacred sites and facilitating pilgrimages for visitors from India.

This pilgrimage follows the renewal of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor Agreement, which allows Indian Sikh pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur in Pakistan, marking a continued commitment to cross-border religious harmony.

Shadani Darbar: A Beacon of Faith

Located in Hayat Pitafi, Ghotki district of Sindh, Shadani Darbar is one of Pakistan's largest Hindu temples. Founded in 1786 by Sant Shadaram Sahib, this revered shrine holds immense spiritual significance for Hindus, particularly those who view Sant Shadaram Sahib as an avatar of Lord Shiva.

Born in Lahore in 1708, Sant Shadaram Sahib is believed to be a descendant of Lord Ram’s son, Lav. From an early age, he embarked on spiritual journeys, visiting sacred sites such as Haridwar, Amarnath, and Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal. Upon reaching Sindh, he established Shadani Darbar, creating a place of worship that continues to draw thousands of devotees annually.

The temple is renowned for its Dhuni Sahib (sacred holy fire) and a sacred well believed to have healing properties. Devotees partake in rituals such as Agni Pooja and mass weddings during the annual celebrations, accompanied by the recitation of holy texts like the Geeta and Guru Granth Sahib.

A Historical Legacy

Shadani Darbar's history is steeped in resilience and miracles. According to temple lore, during the 1930s, when local Hindus faced harassment, Sant Manglaram Sahib, a successor of Sant Shadaram, performed a miracle that protected the village of Hayat Pitafi from aggressors. Such stories enhance the spiritual allure of the site, attracting pilgrims from across the globe.

Fostering Religious Harmony

The issuance of visas underscores the importance of the Pakistan-India Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines. Signed in 1974, this agreement facilitates pilgrimages across the border, promoting cultural understanding and goodwill.

In recent years, such initiatives have gained momentum, with the reopening of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor in 2019 and the ongoing collaboration on maintaining religious sites. These efforts signify a shared commitment to preserving and respecting each other’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
