What's covered under the Article:

  • Pakistani troops fired across the LoC on April 25-26 night; Indian Army retaliated with small arms fire. No casualties reported on either side.

  • India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, closed the Attari border, and expelled Pakistani military diplomats after the Pahalgam terror attack.

  • Pakistan responded by shutting its airspace to Indian carriers and halting trade. Both nations are facing mounting bilateral tensions.

India-Pakistan relations have reached another boiling point after a fresh ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. On the night of April 25 to 26, 2025, the Pakistani Army opened unprovoked fire from multiple posts all across the de facto border, which separates Indian and Pakistani forces in the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

This second consecutive night of provocation was met with a calibrated response by the Indian Army, who returned fire using small arms. In a formal statement, the Indian Army confirmed that no casualties were reported, but condemned the continued aggression by Pakistani forces.

The timing of this incident is particularly significant as it comes just days after the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 people dead, including one Nepali tourist, and several others injured. The Pahalgam incident, which occurred in the scenic Baisaran Valley, shocked the nation and resulted in massive public outrage and grief.

India’s Diplomatic and Strategic Response

In response to these escalations, the Government of India has launched a series of retaliatory diplomatic and strategic actions targeting Pakistan’s interests. These include:

  • Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, a 65-year-old bilateral agreement that governs water sharing between the two countries.

  • Closure of the Attari land border crossing, one of the few direct land links between India and Pakistan.

  • Expulsion of Pakistani military diplomats from Indian soil.

  • Revocation of visas granted to Pakistani nationals.

  • An official directive asking all Pakistani citizens who entered via Attari to leave India by May 1, 2025.

The Indus Waters Treaty, originally brokered by the World Bank in 1960, is a crucial agreement that has survived even during the wars between the two nations. India’s decision to suspend it is a strong geopolitical message and could have far-reaching consequences. Officials in New Delhi stated that the treaty’s suspension comes in light of "continued proxy terrorism" emanating from Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Countermeasures

Pakistan responded swiftly, closing its airspace to Indian airlines and suspending all forms of trade with India, including indirect trade through third countries. Furthermore, Islamabad rejected India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, stating that any move to block the water supply would be treated as an "act of war".

These countermeasures further deepen the crisis between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Diplomatic ties, already frail, are now strained to their limits, with backchannel talks reportedly suspended.

Prime Minister Modi’s Strong Message

Addressing the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a strong and emotional message in the wake of the Pahalgam attack and LoC violations. “We will pursue the perpetrators of this attack to the ends of the earth,” he declared. He also vowed to identify, track, and punish not just the attackers but their backers, sending a clear signal to Pakistan and any entities supporting cross-border terrorism.

Modi’s message reflected India’s evolving doctrine of zero-tolerance towards terrorism and its supporters. The Indian political leadership, cutting across party lines, has unanimously backed the government’s actions against Pakistan.

Link to Pahalgam Attack and LeT Crackdown

The ceasefire violation is being viewed in the context of the ongoing crackdown on Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives. In the last 48 hours, seven houses belonging to LeT terrorists were demolished in Shopian, Kulgam, and Pulwama. Among the demolished homes was that of Shahid Ahmed Kutte, a top LeT commander, along with those of Zahid Ahmed, Ahsan Ul Haq, Ehsan Ahmad Sheikh, and Haris Ahmad—all allegedly involved in or connected to terrorist activity in the region.

On April 25, Anantnag Police also released sketches of key suspects in the Pahalgam terror attack, including Hashim Musa alias Suleman and Ali Bhai alias Talha Bhai, both believed to be Pakistani nationals. A reward of Rs 20 lakh was announced for any information leading to their capture.

This multi-agency crackdown involving the Indian Army, CRPF, and J&K Police is part of a broader counter-terrorism strategy, especially as security agencies believe more attacks may be in the pipeline with support from Pakistan-based handlers.

Tensions on the Ground

On the ground, tension is palpable in the border districts. Locals in Poonch, Rajouri, and Kupwara have reported hearing gunshots and small explosions during the night of April 25-26. Schools in border villages have been shut, and emergency advisories have been issued for civilians living within five kilometers of the LoC.

The Union Home Ministry has put border security forces on high alert, and night patrols have been intensified in vulnerable zones. Military convoys are on the move, and additional troops have been deployed as a precautionary measure.

International Reaction

The global response to these developments has been mixed. While Western allies such as the United States and France condemned the Pahalgam terror attack, they have called for restraint from both sides. The United Nations urged both countries to avoid escalation, but refrained from directly blaming Pakistan for the cross-border firing or terror support.

China, a close ally of Pakistan, has called for dialogue, but India remains firm that "talks and terror cannot go hand in hand."

Conclusion

The events of April 25-26 mark a dangerous escalation in Indo-Pak tensions, with military, diplomatic, and strategic dimensions unfolding simultaneously. With India taking strong measures and Pakistan responding defiantly, the subcontinent is witnessing one of the most serious crises in recent years.

The resumption of firing along the LoC, coupled with harsh diplomatic steps and public outrage, suggests that both countries are on the verge of a prolonged standoff unless cooler heads prevail. For now, India remains firm in its resolve to avenge the Pahalgam attack and ensure the safety of its citizens and territorial integrity.
