In the aftermath of the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists on April 22, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the heinous act and extended his heartfelt sympathy and support for India. In a formal letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Abbas expressed his deepest condolences to the Indian people, particularly the families of the victims. His letter emphasized Palestine’s solidarity with India, underscoring the deep friendship between the two nations.
“We have followed with sorrow the news of the tragic incident that claimed the lives of and injured dozens of innocent civilian tourists,” President Abbas wrote. He further condemned the attacks, describing them as a criminal act, and reaffirmed Palestine’s commitment to India’s security and stability. Abbas conveyed his condolences to PM Modi, stating, “We strongly condemn and denounce this heinous act and affirm our support for India in preserving its security and stability.”
The message of solidarity did not stop there. Abbas expressed his sorrow, wishing peace for the departed souls, a speedy recovery for the injured, and prosperity for India and its people. He concluded the letter by urging for continued peace and well-being for the nation.
This expression of support from Palestine follows in the wake of another show of solidarity from Israel. On the same day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called PM Modi to condemn the attack. Netanyahu extended his sympathy to the victims' families and reaffirmed Israel's solidarity with India, signaling a unified front in the face of such terrorist violence.
Israel’s Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, drew a chilling parallel between the Pahalgam terror attack and the Hamas-led assault on Israel in October 2023, which had targeted civilians with devastating impact. Azar pointed out the similarities between the attacks, highlighting the deliberate targeting of unarmed civilians and warning of increasing coordination between various terrorist groups.
In response to the escalating tensions, the Indian government has taken diplomatic steps to address the situation. These include suspending the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) for Pakistani nationals, closing the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari, and even **halting the Indus Waters Treaty signed in 1960. These measures reflect India's commitment to responding firmly to terrorism, particularly from across its borders.
The Pahalgam terror attack has not only impacted India but has also led to widespread international condemnation. Both Palestine and Israel have shown support, emphasizing the shared responsibility to combat terrorism and its devastating impact on innocent civilians.
