The Monsoon Session of Parliament witnessed heated discussions on Operation Sindoor, India's military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh officially initiated the debate in the Lok Sabha, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and other prominent leaders slated to contribute. There is also anticipation of intervention by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Among the highlights, Union Minister Chirag Paswan sharply criticized the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for what he described as disrespect towards the Indian armed forces. Paswan alleged that in their efforts to target the government, the Opposition undermined the bravery and sacrifices of Indian soldiers who executed Operation Sindoor. He praised the valour of the armed forces and lauded PM Modi’s resolute leadership in authorising the operation.
Paswan further accused the Opposition of placing more faith in foreign narratives than in India’s own government, suggesting they echoed divisive rhetoric that threatened national unity. He called on all parties to stop politicizing issues of national security.
Support and Praise for Operation Sindoor
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar received commendations from PM Modi, who described his speech in Parliament as “outstanding” for effectively presenting India’s firm stance against terrorism to the global audience.
Meanwhile, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi praised the Indian Armed Forces, citing the destruction of the Bahawalpur terror camp as the key success of Operation Sindoor. However, he questioned the government’s decision to permit an India-Pakistan cricket match amid the ongoing conflict, challenging the moral basis of such an engagement.
Justice and Accountability Concerns Raised
NCP leader Supriya Sule expressed that Operation Sindoor was incomplete without delivering justice to the families of the Pahalgam victims. Sule relayed the emotional plea of Asawari Jagdale, daughter of one victim, underscoring the trauma faced by families and the need for the capture and punishment of the perpetrators.
Sule also noted the importance of the ceasefire, which drew global condemnation of terrorism while India’s military response received less attention internationally.
Military and Strategic Perspectives
Union Minister Anurag Thakur emphasized the precision and impact of the strikes during Operation Sindoor, claiming approximately 20% of Pakistan’s air force assets were destroyed. He described the operation as a shift to a doctrine of zero tolerance toward terrorism, stating India no longer waits for international permission to act decisively.
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya characterized the conflict as a new-age warfare, highlighting the use of drones and advanced military technology. He hailed Operation Sindoor as a decisive military success and criticized the Congress party for undermining India’s strength.
Diplomatic and Political Dimensions
Jaishankar detailed the challenges India faced at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), where Pakistan held membership. Despite this, India secured strong condemnation of the Pahalgam attack and calls for accountability through the UNSC statement dated April 25.
He affirmed that India’s response to terrorism from Pakistan would continue beyond Operation Sindoor, highlighting ongoing visa restrictions and counterterrorism efforts.
On the political front, Congress MP Deepender Hooda expressed concerns about the United States’ role in the India-Pakistan ceasefire, criticizing the government’s muted response to former US President Donald Trump’s multiple claims of brokering peace. Hooda sarcastically suggested that the government confront Trump or consider banning McDonald’s in India.
During the debate, BJP MP Baijayant Panda announced that an anti-terror operation, Operation Mahadev, is ongoing in Jammu and Kashmir, with terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack reportedly killed.
This comprehensive overview captures the key moments and opinions from the Parliament Monsoon Session debate on Operation Sindoor, reflecting the political, military, and diplomatic facets of India’s current security scenario.
