The Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the construction of a 120 km-long, four-lane corridor from Patna to Sasaram at an estimated cost of ₹3,712.40 crore. The Patna-Arrah-Sasaram corridor, designated as NH-119A, is expected to ease traffic congestion and significantly improve connectivity across Bihar. The project will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), ensuring a structured approach to funding and execution.
A Solution to Traffic Congestion
Currently, travel between Sasaram, Arrah, and Patna relies on existing State Highways, leading to long travel times of 3-4 hours due to heavy congestion, especially in Arrah town. To tackle this issue, the new corridor will include a greenfield highway along with 10.6 km of brownfield upgradation to reduce bottlenecks in urban areas such as Arrah, Grahini, Piro, Bikramganj, Mokar, and Sasaram.
Impact on Bihar’s Connectivity
The NH-119A corridor will not only improve intra-state transport but also enhance road connectivity to Lucknow, Patna, Ranchi, and Varanasi. Additionally, the project will:
-
Enhance access to two key airports: Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna and the upcoming Bihta Airport.
-
Improve transportation to four major railway stations: Sasaram, Arrah, Danapur, and Patna.
-
Provide direct access to the Patna Ring Road and the inland water terminal in Patna for improved logistics.
Economic and Employment Benefits
The project is expected to create 48 lakh man-days worth of employment, offering significant job opportunities for the local workforce. By facilitating better connectivity and reducing travel time, it will also promote trade, tourism, and industrial growth in Bihar.
Land Acquisition and Funding
The total land acquisition cost for the corridor has been estimated at ₹718.97 crore, ensuring minimal disruption while acquiring necessary land. The Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) will be used for funding, balancing government and private investment.
A Boost for Bihar’s Infrastructure
The Patna-Sasaram highway project is a key step in Bihar’s infrastructure development, ensuring smoother transportation and fueling economic growth in emerging regions. The modern highway network will provide a reliable and faster route for passengers and commercial vehicles alike.
