RSS Sarkaryavah Dattatreya Hosabale recently spoke about patriotism, the role of Shakhas, and the caste system in India during an exclusive interview with the Vikrama Weekly magazine of Karnataka. He expressed his views on nationalism, the Sangh’s mission, and how the Shakha system has been instrumental in shaping individuals and strengthening the organization over the years.

The Role of Patriotism in Politics

Hosabale emphasized that patriotism should be the core foundation for all political parties in India. According to him, irrespective of ideological differences, political parties must work towards national unity and welfare. He remarked that aligning political goals with national interest is essential for India’s holistic progress.

Understanding the Shakha System

Speaking about the Shakha system, Hosabale stated that the concept was devised over a century ago to nurture and shape individuals. The Shakha, which is a daily one-hour activity held in public spaces, promotes discipline, dedication, and a nationalistic mindset.

He explained that Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the founder of the RSS, developed the Shakha system after gaining immense experience through participation in the freedom movement and various social activities. The methodology of the Shakha, according to Hosabale, reflects Dr Hedgewar’s deep understanding of India’s socio-cultural framework.

A Shakha’s existence in any town or village signifies the Sangh’s presence in that area. It is a system designed to create disciplined, patriotic individuals who dedicate themselves to the nation’s cause. Although it appears simple, it requires sustained dedication over years,” Hosabale added.

The Pracharak System and its Origins

Hosabale also spoke about the Pracharak system in the RSS, where individuals devote their lives to the service of society. He mentioned that the exact source of inspiration for the Pracharak system is not definitively known. However, he highlighted that India’s long-standing tradition of sages, saints, and freedom fighters who selflessly worked for society and the nation may have influenced Dr Hedgewar’s concept of Pracharaks.

The Pracharak system is similar to the concept of ‘Mahanth’ introduced by Samarth Ramadas in Maharashtra. While Dr Hedgewar never explicitly mentioned adopting this idea, it is possible that he was influenced by such traditions,” he said.

Hosabale acknowledged that Dr Hedgewar’s thoughts were never extensively documented, but the legacy of the Shakha and Pracharak systems continues to impact Indian society today.

RSS's Stance on Caste and Inequality

Hosabale addressed the sensitive issue of caste in Indian society, emphasizing that caste should not be preserved solely for the sake of diversity. He argued that India’s natural and geographical diversity ensures cultural richness, making caste-based segregation unnecessary.

“The Sangh believes that if caste remains confined to family traditions or domestic practices, it does not harm society. However, if caste becomes a tool for discrimination or determines political power, it creates societal issues,” Hosabale remarked.

He highlighted that the RSS has always advocated for societal and constitutional reforms to eliminate inequalities for those who have been deprived of respect, opportunities, and equality due to birth-based discrimination. Hosabale stated, “The Sangh’s influence has contributed to weakening caste-based barriers over time. Today, individuals from diverse backgrounds are choosing life partners based on career compatibility rather than caste, reflecting a positive shift in societal attitudes.”

Impact of Sangh’s Efforts on Society

Hosabale noted that the Sangh’s continuous efforts have significantly influenced societal change, although he acknowledged that this transformation is not solely the result of RSS initiatives. He cited examples of how individuals from different walks of life, such as IAS officers, sports personalities, film stars, and IT professionals, are breaking caste barriers and contributing to a more inclusive society.

With changing times, caste identities are gradually diminishing, paving the way for a more unified and progressive India,” Hosabale said, expressing hope for a future where equality and opportunity prevail over caste-based divisions.

The Sangh’s Vision for National Unity

Hosabale reiterated that the RSS’s vision has always been to create a society based on mutual respect, harmony, and equality. He stressed that patriotism, discipline, and service to the nation should be the driving force behind every political ideology and social initiative.

“The Sangh’s mission is to nurture individuals who are committed to the nation’s welfare, irrespective of caste, creed, or socio-economic background. Patriotism should transcend political boundaries and unite all parties in their quest to serve the nation,” he emphasized.

Conclusion

In his insightful interview, Dattatreya Hosabale provided a comprehensive overview of the RSS’s principles, the relevance of the Shakha and Pracharak systems, and the need to address caste-based inequalities. His emphasis on patriotism as a common foundation for all political parties highlights the importance of national unity and collective progress.

As India moves toward a more inclusive and egalitarian society, Hosabale’s vision underscores the need for sustained efforts in fostering harmony, equality, and patriotism among all sections of society.
