  • PM Modi’s scheduled visit to Jammu and Kashmir on April 19 has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions.

  • The inauguration of the Vande Bharat Express connecting Katra to Srinagar has been delayed along with the launch of the world’s highest railway bridge.

  • Officials confirmed that a successful trial run of the Vande Bharat Express on the Katra-Sangaldan stretch was conducted before the postponement.

In a significant development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Jammu and Kashmir on April 19, 2025, has been postponed, as per an official notification issued by the Special Protection Group (SPG). While the notification did not specify the reasons for the delay, reports suggest that the visit was called off due to an adverse weather forecast for the valley. The Prime Minister was originally scheduled to inaugurate the maiden Vande Bharat Express service connecting Katra to Srinagar and also launch the world's highest railway bridge in Udhampur.

The official notification regarding the visit stated, "The proposed visit of the Prime Minister to Jammu and Kashmir stands postponed. Grateful for necessary action," though it did not elaborate on the specific causes of the change in plans. This delay has raised concerns over the timeline for the inauguration of the Vande Bharat Express and the railway bridge, two major milestones for the region’s infrastructure.

Vande Bharat Express and Kashmir’s Rail Connectivity

One of the key events for the Prime Minister’s visit was the inauguration of the Vande Bharat Express, a high-speed train designed to improve connectivity between Katra and Srinagar. This Vande Bharat Express was expected to be a significant step toward integrating Kashmir into the national railway network, a goal that has long been pursued by various governments. With this service, passengers would be able to travel between Katra and Srinagar more efficiently, cutting down travel time significantly.

While the official inauguration has been postponed, a successful trial run of the Vande Bharat Express was conducted on April 15, 2025, on the Katra-Sangaldan stretch, a part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. This trial run marks a major milestone in the progress of the 272-kilometre-long project, which aims to establish seamless rail connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of India. The Vande Bharat Express had two trains slated to operate on the launch day, one traveling from Srinagar to Katra and the other in the opposite direction.

World’s Highest Railway Bridge Inauguration Delayed

In addition to the Vande Bharat Express inauguration, PM Modi was also expected to inaugurate the world’s highest railway bridge, located in Udhampur, which has been a part of the ambitious rail project to connect Kashmir with the rest of India. This project, which began in 1997, has faced several delays due to challenging geographical, geological, and weather conditions. Despite these obstacles, the project has reached a significant point of completion, and the bridge stands as a monumental achievement in Indian railway history.

The completed rail link will span 119 kilometres of track, featuring 38 tunnels, with the longest being Tunnel T-49 at 12.75 kilometres. This world’s highest railway bridge is set to be a symbol of technological advancement and regional integration, once it is inaugurated.

Why the Postponement Matters

The delay of Prime Minister Modi’s visit and the subsequent postponement of these crucial events is a setback for the region’s development plans. Kashmir has long been seeking better connectivity with the rest of India, and the Vande Bharat Express was expected to significantly enhance that connectivity. The introduction of the world’s highest railway bridge also had the potential to be a global showcase of India’s engineering capabilities.

With the weather conditions cited as the reason for the delay, the Prime Minister’s office has not yet released new dates for the rescheduled visit and the inauguration events. This delay could affect the timelines for Kashmir’s railway projects, which are integral to its economic development and tourism growth.

Impact on Kashmir’s Infrastructure Development

The Vande Bharat Express and world’s highest railway bridge were part of the larger vision to integrate Kashmir into India’s broader national infrastructure. These projects were expected to boost the economy by improving access to key regions, promoting tourism, and facilitating easier travel for businessmen and students alike.

The delay is expected to have a short-term impact on these sectors. However, with the trial run of the Vande Bharat Express already completed, the project remains on track for completion, and the eventual inauguration will be a significant step forward in enhancing Kashmir's connectivity.
