In a major strategic announcement during his 103-minute Independence Day 2025 address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled Mission ‘Sudarshan Chakra’—an ambitious, indigenous air defence programme aimed at protecting critical strategic, civilian and faith-based locations across the country. Drawing inspiration from Lord Krishna’s powerful Sudarshan Chakra, the Prime Minister said the defensive shield would form a ‘Rashtriya Suraksha Kavach’ (National Security Shield) over India in the next 10 years.

Modi emphasised that the initiative would integrate advanced surveillance, interception and counter-attack capabilities, enabling India to respond swiftly and decisively to aerial threats coming from land, sea, or air. “For the safety of our citizens and national infrastructure, we will continue to enhance our defence capabilities. Just as Lord Krishna’s Sudarshan Chakra protected the world, India’s Sudarshan Chakra will protect our nation,” the Prime Minister noted.

Although Modi did not provide specific technical details of the system, defence experts believe the new air shield could function similar to Israel’s Iron Dome—a highly effective, layered missile defence system capable of intercepting drones, rockets and short-range missiles in real-time. Experts add that the project will synergise India’s internal and external security needs, combining defensive and offensive roles in one integrated system.

Defence analyst Rajiv Nayan observed that this is a landmark development. “The Prime Minister has linked internal and external security challenges. The concept of Sudarshan Chakra implies rapid interception capabilities and the ability to launch pre-emptive counter operations when required,” he said.

With this announcement, India signals its intent to become self-reliant in advanced missile defence technology, while preserving a connection to its cultural and civilisational roots. The Sudarshan Chakra system will not only fortify Indian skies, but also represent a contemporary embodiment of India’s spiritual and strategic heritage in national security.
