Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on an official visit to Kerala and Tamil Nadu on March 11, where he will inaugurate, dedicate to the nation and lay the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth approximately ₹16,450 crore.

The projects span several key sectors including railways, petroleum and natural gas infrastructure, highways and rural connectivity.

The visit will begin in Kerala, where projects worth around ₹10,800 crore will be launched, before the Prime Minister travels to Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu for another set of infrastructure initiatives valued at about ₹5,650 crore.

The visit also includes public programmes, infrastructure inaugurations and a major political rally of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

PM Modi Arrives in Kerala

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive at Cochin International Airport at around 11:30 AM.

Following his arrival, he will travel to a naval base in Kochi before proceeding by road to Marine Drive in Ernakulam.

One of the first programmes in Kerala will be participation in the golden jubilee celebrations of the Dheevara Sabha, a prominent community organisation.

Later in the day, the Prime Minister will also take part in the NDA election convention, which will mark the formal launch of the alliance’s campaign ahead of upcoming assembly elections in the state.

Organisers expect around 50,000 party workers and supporters to attend the event.

Leaders from NDA partner parties such as Bharath Dharma Jana Sena and Twenty20 are also expected to participate.

Development Projects in Kerala

During his visit to Ernakulam, the Prime Minister will inaugurate and dedicate several major projects to the nation.

These projects collectively are valued at approximately ₹10,800 crore.

They focus primarily on strengthening infrastructure across sectors such as:

• Petroleum and natural gas

• Transport connectivity

• Public infrastructure

The initiatives aim to improve energy availability, economic activity and regional development in Kerala.

Visit to Tamil Nadu

After completing his engagements in Kerala, the Prime Minister will leave for Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu at around 2:30 PM.

There, he will launch development projects worth approximately ₹5,650 crore.

The programmes will include inaugurations, foundation stone laying ceremonies, and the flagging off of railway services.

In the evening, the Prime Minister will also address a large public rally organised by the NDA alliance in Tiruchirappalli.

The rally is scheduled to begin around 6:30 PM.

Railway Connectivity Boost

One of the key highlights of the visit will be the flagging off of new railway services.

The Prime Minister will launch:

• Two Amrit Bharat Express trains

• Two additional express trains

• One passenger train service

These trains are expected to improve rail connectivity between Tamil Nadu and several other regions including Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and eastern India.

Enhanced railway connectivity is expected to facilitate passenger travel, economic activity and regional integration.

Rural Connectivity Projects

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate 89 rural roads covering about 370 kilometres in Tamil Nadu under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).

These roads will significantly improve connectivity in rural areas.

Improved road networks will allow easier access to:

• Agricultural markets

• Schools and educational institutions

• Healthcare facilities

Better connectivity is expected to support economic development in rural regions and improve access to essential services.

Petroleum and Energy Sector Projects

Several major projects in the petroleum and natural gas sector will also be launched during the visit.

One of the major initiatives is the foundation stone for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s City Gas Distribution Network in Nilgiris and Erode districts.

The project involves an investment of more than ₹3,680 crore.

Once completed, the project is expected to:

• Provide PNG (Piped Natural Gas) connections to over 8.8 lakh households

• Supply gas to more than 200 commercial establishments

• Establish over 201 CNG stations

The initiative aims to expand access to cleaner energy solutions and strengthen gas infrastructure in the region.

IOCL Lube Plant in Chennai

The Prime Minister will also dedicate to the nation a major project by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).

This includes the ₹1,490 crore Lube Plant located at Manali in Chennai.

The plant has a production capacity of 672 thousand metric tonnes per annum.

The facility is expected to strengthen India’s domestic lubricants manufacturing capacity and reduce dependence on imports.

Highway Infrastructure Project

Another key project during the visit will be the foundation stone for a greenfield bypass near Gangaikonda Cholapuram on National Highway 81.

The bypass is intended to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in the region.

Such highway projects are part of broader efforts to enhance transport infrastructure and logistics efficiency across India.

Political Reactions

The Prime Minister’s visit has also drawn reactions from political leaders.

Leaders from opposition parties have criticised the visit, describing it as politically motivated.

At the same time, BJP leaders and NDA representatives have highlighted the infrastructure initiatives and expressed confidence about the alliance’s prospects in upcoming elections.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who arrived earlier in Tamil Nadu, stated that the NDA alliance aims to form the next government in the state.
