PM Modi, Brazilian President agree to boost ties as Trump sparks tariff tensions

  • PM Modi and Brazil’s President discuss strengthening bilateral trade, investment, and strategic cooperation amid global tariff disputes.

  • Leaders exchange views on key global and regional developments, reaffirming commitment to multilateralism and economic collaboration.

  • Talks highlight shared priorities in trade, climate action, technology, and South-South cooperation despite global trade uncertainties.

Amid escalating trade tensions triggered by Donald Trump’s tariff moves, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the President of Brazil held a high-level phone conversation to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the call focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, technology, climate action, and strategic engagement between the two countries. The discussion comes at a time when global markets are reacting sharply to Washington’s new tariff policies, which threaten to disrupt established supply chains.

The Brazilian President’s outreach is seen as a diplomatic balancing move, aimed at deepening South-South partnerships in response to the shifting trade environment. India and Brazil, both members of BRICS and the G20, have been long-standing partners in pushing for reforms in global governance and building economic resilience against protectionist trends.

PM Modi welcomed Brazil’s interest in expanding agricultural exports to India, while highlighting opportunities for Indian companies in Brazil’s infrastructure and renewable energy sectors. Both leaders stressed the importance of diversifying trade partners to reduce overdependence on traditional markets that are increasingly prone to political disruptions.

The conversation also touched upon regional security dynamics, including developments in South America and the Indo-Pacific. Modi and the Brazilian President agreed on the need for collective action against climate change, given their countries’ large biodiversity reserves — the Amazon rainforest and the Himalayan ecosystem.

Diplomatic observers note that such outreach between India and Brazil is not new, but the timing is crucial. With the U.S. under Trump moving towards an aggressive tariff policy, emerging economies are re-evaluating alliances to safeguard their growth. Both leaders agreed that multilateral platforms such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and UN bodies must be strengthened to maintain fair trade practices.

The call also reaffirmed the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership, signed in 2006, which covers cooperation in defence, cyber security, agriculture, and science & technology. The leaders expressed satisfaction at the progress made in space collaboration, particularly satellite launches and joint research in earth observation technologies.

This development also signals India’s increasing engagement with Latin America as part of its broader Act Global policy, which complements the Act East and Neighbourhood First approaches. For Brazil, closer ties with India provide an opportunity to tap into Asia’s fast-growing markets while countering the impact of North American trade pressures.

In the backdrop of global uncertainties, the India-Brazil conversation represents a strategic recalibration. Both nations share a vision of a multipolar world order, where cooperation among emerging economies can ensure economic stability and political autonomy.

As Trump’s tariff announcements continue to dominate headlines, India and Brazil’s reaffirmation of their partnership offers a counter-narrative — one of collaboration over confrontation. The coming months will reveal whether this renewed engagement translates into concrete trade agreements and investment flows, but for now, both capitals are sending a clear message: partnerships among the Global South are here to stay.
