New Delhi / Hansalpur, August 26, 2025 – In a landmark event for India’s automotive and clean mobility journey, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today commemorated two historic firsts at Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited (SMG) and TDS Lithium-Ion Battery Gujarat Private Limited (TDSG):

  1. The start of production of Maruti Suzuki’s first Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the e VITARA, to be exported to over 100 countries.

  2. The launch of Suzuki’s first lithium-ion battery, cell, and electrode manufacturing in India for strong hybrid electric vehicles.

The event was also attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Ambassador of Japan to India Keiichi Ono, Toshihiro Suzuki, President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, R.C. Bhargava, Chairman of Maruti Suzuki, and Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO of Maruti Suzuki, alongside senior officials, business partners, and government dignitaries.

A milestone in Make in India & Aatmanirbhar Bharat

The Prime Minister highlighted how these developments advance India’s vision of self-reliance in electric mobility and green technology. The e VITARA, built on a dedicated EV platform, is not an IC-engine conversion but a ground-up electric model. It represents Suzuki’s global technology combined with India’s manufacturing strength.

The first batch of export-bound e VITARA SUVs will soon be shipped to Europe, including the UK, Germany, Norway, France, and other countries, making it India’s largest mass-produced and exported EV.

Lithium-ion battery manufacturing in India

In parallel, TDS Lithium-Ion Battery Gujarat Pvt. Ltd. (TDSG) began production of localized lithium-ion battery cells and electrodes – a first for India. These batteries will power Maruti Suzuki’s strong hybrid vehicles, starting with the popular Grand Vitara.

TDSG currently has a production capacity of 18 million cells annually, with expansion plans to add 12 million more cells per year. This step significantly reduces India’s dependence on imports and strengthens its EV and hybrid vehicle ecosystem.

Suzuki’s investments in India

Suzuki Group’s total investments in India have now crossed ₹1,00,000 crore, leading to the creation of more than 11 lakh direct jobs in the value chain.

  • SMG (Suzuki Motor Gujarat): Spread over 640 acres, it has a production capacity of 7.5 lakh units annually and recently achieved the milestone of 4 million cumulative units manufactured since 2017. Upcoming investments include ₹3,200 crore for a dedicated EV plant (Plant D).

  • TDSG: Invested over ₹4,267 crore to establish India’s first lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility.

Leadership remarks

Speaking at the event, Toshihiro Suzuki, President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, said:

“We are deeply honoured that the Hon’ble Prime Minister graced this historic occasion. His vision of Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat has inspired Suzuki to deepen its investments here. These milestones showcase the Indo-Japanese partnership for a carbon-neutral future.”

Global rollout of e VITARA

The e VITARA will be Maruti Suzuki’s first mass-produced electric SUV for both Indian and international markets. With shipments beginning from Pipavav port, it will soon reach Europe and Japan, cementing India’s role as a global EV manufacturing hub.

Conclusion

With the rollout of the e VITARA and localized lithium-ion battery production, Maruti Suzuki has positioned India at the forefront of global EV manufacturing and hybrid technology development. These initiatives not only contribute to the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision but also boost India’s reputation as a trusted hub for advanced automotive manufacturing and exports.
