PORT OF SPAIN (TRINIDAD & TOBAGO), July 3, 2025 (local time):
Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his first official visit to Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday with a warm diplomatic gesture, gifting holy water from the Mahakumbh and Sarayu River, along with a replica of the Ram Mandir, to his host Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Mr. Modi landed at Piarco International Airport, where he received a ceremonial Guard of Honour and a grand welcome led by Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar, accompanied by 38 ministers and four Members of Parliament of the Caribbean nation.

This marks the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Trinidad and Tobago in 26 years. Speaking at an event with the Indian community, Mr. Modi underlined the deep cultural ties between the two nations and highlighted Ms. Persad-Bissessar’s ancestral roots in Buxar, Bihar.

“Kamala ji’s ancestors lived in Buxar. She herself has visited there. People consider her a daughter of Bihar,” Mr. Modi said.

During his address, he shared the significance of the Mahakumbh, which is regarded as the world's largest spiritual gathering, saying:

“I have the honour to carry water from the Mahakumbh with me. I request Kamala ji to offer the holy waters of the Sarayu river and Mahakumbh to the Ganga Dhara here.”

Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar also addressed the gathering, reaffirming the shared heritage and emotional ties between India and Trinidad and Tobago. She had previously visited her ancestral village Bhelupur in Buxar district in 2012.

The Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, described the visit as historic, noting the strong people-to-people ties.

“After 26 years, a PM-level visit is taking place. A total of 13 lakh people live in Trinidad and Tobago, of which 45% are of Indian origin,” Mr. Jaiswal said.

He further noted that most of these families trace their origins to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, especially Bhojpuri-speaking districts such as Chhapra, Ara, Ballia, Siwan, Gopalganj, Banaras, and Azamgarh.

The visit is part of Mr. Modi’s five-nation diplomatic tour, aimed at strengthening India's relationships across the globe, especially with countries that share a significant Indian diaspora and historical links.

Mr. Modi's offering of holy water from India's sacred rivers and a Ram Mandir replica is seen as a deeply symbolic act of cultural diplomacy, reinforcing ties rooted in shared heritage and spiritual traditions.
