Prime Minister Narendra Modi has departed for Croatia, the final destination of his ongoing three-nation tour, after concluding a productive visit to Canada where he participated in the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
During the Canadian leg of his tour, the Prime Minister engaged in a series of high-level bilateral and multilateral discussions, aimed at enhancing India's global diplomatic footprint, strengthening bilateral ties, and contributing meaningfully to shared global challenges.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said:
“Concluding a productive Canada visit. Thankful to the Canadian people and Government for hosting a successful G7 Summit, which witnessed fruitful discussions on diverse global issues. We remain committed to furthering global peace, prosperity and sustainability.”
Productive Engagements at the G7 Summit
At the G7 Summit, hosted in the scenic town of Kananaskis, Prime Minister Modi held “productive” exchanges with leaders of the seven-nation bloc, contributing to discussions around peace, sustainability, economic resilience, and climate action.
While the summit was marked by geopolitical distractions, including the sudden early departure of US President Donald Trump, the remaining leaders carried forward crucial outreach discussions involving guest countries like India, South Africa, Indonesia, Brazil and Mexico.
Mr. Modi took part in these deliberations and shared India’s vision for a more equitable and sustainable global order. His interventions were reportedly well received, especially around topics such as clean energy, global supply chains, and climate justice.
Key Bilateral Meetings Held in Canada
During his time in Canada, Prime Minister Modi met with several global counterparts, reinforcing India’s strategic bilateral partnerships. Notably, he held separate meetings with:
-
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney
-
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung
-
French President Emmanuel Macron
-
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer
-
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni
-
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
These meetings focused on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, innovation, technology, green energy, and cultural exchanges.
Reset in India-Canada Relations
Mr. Modi’s meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was particularly significant, given the recent diplomatic strain between New Delhi and Ottawa. Emphasising that India-Canada relations are “extremely important,” the Prime Minister called for a reset in bilateral engagement focused on mutual benefit and win-win outcomes.
In a key development following the talks, India and Canada agreed to designate new high commissioners, signalling an intention to restore normal consular and trade services for citizens and businesses.
According to a statement released by the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, both sides reiterated their commitment to rebuild trust and “deliver tangible outcomes in the interest of both nations.”
Significance of the Canada Visit
This marked Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Canada in a decade, underlining its strategic relevance amid shifting global alignments.
The visit provided a platform to realign India-Canada relations, and also positioned India as a key partner in G7 outreach efforts, particularly in the context of climate diplomacy, multilateral reform, and economic cooperation.
In addition, Mr. Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to support global peace, prosperity, and sustainability, in line with India’s positioning as a voice of the Global South.
Next Stop: Croatia
From Canada, Prime Minister Modi has now headed to Croatia, the final leg of his three-nation tour that began with a visit to Cyprus. In Croatia, the Prime Minister is expected to hold bilateral discussions with Croatian leadership, focusing on deepening strategic cooperation, particularly in areas such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, defence, and technology.
This will be Modi’s first visit to Croatia as Prime Minister, and is expected to be a historic moment in India-Croatia diplomatic relations.
Background: The Three-Nation Tour
PM Modi’s ongoing tour began with a visit to Cyprus, where he held talks with President Nikos Christodoulides and announced a range of new cooperation initiatives, especially in shipping, fintech, and maritime connectivity.
He then proceeded to Canada to attend the G7 Summit, where he participated in outreach sessions and conducted several important bilateral meetings.
The final stop—Croatia—marks the culmination of a tour designed to reaffirm India’s strategic interests across Europe and North America, while also reinforcing India’s role as a constructive contributor to global stability.
Looking Ahead
With world affairs in flux due to conflicts in the Middle East, great-power rivalry, and trade fragmentation, India’s ability to navigate complex diplomatic terrain is being watched closely. Prime Minister Modi’s recent engagements, particularly at the G7 and with countries like Canada and Croatia, suggest an approach that blends strategic pragmatism with assertive diplomacy.
As India positions itself for leadership in forums such as the G20, BRICS+ and the Quad, its continued engagement with blocs like the G7 signals an effort to bridge developed and developing world interests—a hallmark of its emerging global role
