On the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the historic Red Fort in New Delhi, marking his 12th speech from this iconic venue. Lasting 103 minutes, the speech highlighted several key initiatives aimed at empowering youth and promoting sports across the country, with particular focus on far-flung and rural areas.
One of the central themes of PM Modi’s address was the evolving mindset of parents in India towards sports. He observed that in recent years, parents are increasingly proud when their children pursue sports, recognizing the role it plays in personal and national development. Modi called this change in attitude a promising indicator for the future of the country, highlighting that sports are no longer seen merely as extracurricular but as an essential component of holistic development.
The Prime Minister emphasized the National Sports Policy (NSP) 2025, which replaces the 2001 policy, providing a visionary roadmap to establish India as a global powerhouse in sports. The policy aims to foster a robust ecosystem that supports athletes from schools to Olympic levels, ensuring long-term growth, competitiveness, and excellence in international sporting events. Modi also highlighted the Khelo India initiative, designed to identify and nurture talent, develop infrastructure, and create a structured sports ecosystem nationwide. He underlined that these efforts extend to remote and underserved regions, ensuring equitable opportunities for all aspiring athletes.
Beyond national policies, Modi also touched upon India’s international sporting ambitions, particularly the official bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG). Following Canada’s withdrawal, India’s chances of securing the hosting rights have strengthened. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) formally approved the CWG 2030 bid during its Special General Meeting on August 13, 2025, reflecting India’s growing prominence and readiness to organize world-class sporting events.
PM Modi concluded his address by stressing the transformative impact of sports on youth empowerment, national pride, and international recognition. By combining policy support, infrastructure development, and parental encouragement, India aims to create a sustainable sports ecosystem that nurtures talent at all levels and ensures global competitiveness.
This Independence Day address reinforces the government’s commitment to making sports an integral part of India’s development agenda, promoting inclusivity, and inspiring the next generation of athletes to excel on the national and international stage.
