Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again underlined the importance of women’s role in shaping India’s growth story, describing them as the key drivers of the country’s development. Speaking at a public event, the Prime Minister praised the extraordinary contribution of women across sectors, particularly in rural India, where self-help groups (SHGs) and women-led initiatives have become powerful examples of transformation.
Women as Growth Catalysts
Mr. Modi highlighted that India’s vision of becoming a developed nation cannot be fulfilled without the active participation and leadership of women. He said that women are no longer just participants but are taking leadership roles in entrepreneurship, agriculture, technology, and governance. He called this shift a symbol of New India’s inclusive growth model.
Role of Self-Help Groups (SHGs)
The Prime Minister praised the work of self-help groups (SHGs) that have empowered millions of women in rural India. By pooling resources, supporting small businesses, and creating employment opportunities, SHGs have given women financial independence and strengthened their role in decision-making at the household and community levels.
Over the past decade, the government has implemented several schemes to expand the reach and capacity of SHGs. Many women-led SHGs are now involved in food processing, handicrafts, digital services, and local governance activities. According to Mr. Modi, SHGs represent the spirit of self-reliance and grassroots democracy.
NaMo Drone Didi Scheme
One of the standout initiatives mentioned by the Prime Minister was the NaMo Drone Didi scheme, which provides drones to trained rural women to assist in modern farming practices. By operating drones for spraying pesticides, monitoring crops, and enhancing farm productivity, women are stepping into technology-driven roles traditionally dominated by men.
Mr. Modi noted that such initiatives not only increase agricultural efficiency but also give rural women a new identity as entrepreneurs and tech operators, changing social perceptions and creating new avenues for income.
Empowering Women in Every Sector
The Prime Minister stressed that from science to sports, governance to grassroots development, Indian women are achieving new milestones. He pointed out that women entrepreneurs are at the forefront of India’s startup ecosystem, while women scientists and engineers are making significant contributions to the country’s space and defence programmes.
He also highlighted the success of government initiatives such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, MUDRA loans, and Lakhpati Didi which have improved access to education, finance, and livelihood opportunities for women.
Building a Women-Led Development Model
Mr. Modi concluded by stating that the future of India’s growth will be defined by a women-led development model where women are not seen merely as beneficiaries of schemes but as leaders of change. He urged society to encourage women to take up leadership in politics, entrepreneurship, science, and social work.
The Prime Minister’s remarks are a reminder that India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation will depend significantly on how effectively it harnesses the power, talent, and leadership of women across all spheres of life.
