During his visit, PM Modi recalled the brave escape of Veer Savarkar, one of India’s most revered freedom fighters, and acknowledged the French activists who helped Savarkar during his time in peril.
In a post shared on X, PM Modi emphasized the importance of Marseille in India’s fight for independence. He wrote, “Landed in Marseille. In India’s quest for freedom, this city holds special significance. It was here that the great Veer Savarkar attempted a courageous escape. I also want to thank the people of Marseille and the French activists of that time who demanded that he not be handed over to British custody. The bravery of Veer Savarkar continues to inspire generations!”
Savarkar's courageous escape from British custody
In 1910, Veer Savarkar was arrested in London in connection with the Nasik Conspiracy Case. While being deported to India, Savarkar made a daring attempt to escape British custody. Off the coast of Marseille, he jumped into the sea and swam towards the French coast, braving gunfire from the ship. Despite his efforts, he was arrested by British authorities in Marseille. However, the French government protested his arrest on French soil, bringing attention to Savarkar’s bravery and the Indian freedom struggle.
PM Modi, while in Marseille, also thanked the French activists of that time who supported Savarkar and opposed his handover to the British. This protest helped highlight Savarkar’s contributions to India’s fight for independence on the international stage.
PM Modi and President Macron visit ITER and honor soldiers
During his visit, PM Modi and President Macron visited the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), an important international collaboration focused on nuclear fusion research. The project symbolizes the growing partnership between India and France in scientific innovation and global problem-solving.
PM Modi also paid tribute to Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I and World War II by visiting the Mazargues War Cemetery in Marseille. The cemetery is the final resting place for many Indian soldiers who fought alongside French forces during the World Wars. This visit underscored the long-standing bond between the two nations, marked by mutual respect and shared history.
In addition, PM Modi inaugurated the Indian Consulate in Marseille, a significant step in deepening people-to-people linkages and strengthening India-France relations.
PM Modi addresses India-France CEOs Forum and AI Summit
PM Modi also attended the India-France CEOs Forum in Paris, where he highlighted the growing economic ties between the two nations. In a post on X, he wrote, “The India-France CEO Forum plays a key role in strengthening economic ties and fostering innovation. It is gladdening to see business leaders from both nations collaborate and create new opportunities across key sectors. This drives growth, investment, and ensures a better future for the coming generations.”
The forum brought together business leaders from India and France to discuss opportunities in various sectors, reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two countries. PM Modi emphasized that India and France are united by democratic values, innovation, and a commitment to solving global challenges together.
