Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius on March 11, 2025, for a two-day State visit. Upon his arrival, he was warmly received by Mauritius PM Navin Ramgoolam and members of the Indian diaspora. The visit is set to coincide with the country’s National Day celebrations, where PM Modi will attend as the Chief Guest on March 12, 2025.
In a heartfelt message shared on X, PM Modi expressed gratitude to PM Ramgoolam for the warm reception and emphasized the visit’s importance for furthering India-Mauritius relations. "This visit provides a wonderful opportunity to engage with a valued friend and explore new avenues for collaboration," he said. The two leaders will discuss strengthening ties in various sectors, including trade, defense, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Strengthening India-Mauritius Relations
The visit highlights the long-standing and historic ties between India and Mauritius, particularly through people-to-people connections. PM Modi remarked that the shared bond is a source of pride for both nations, and significant strides have been made over the past decade. He added that this trip would open a new chapter in the bilateral relationship.
Over 20 India-Funded Projects to be Inaugurated
During his stay, PM Modi is scheduled to inaugurate over 20 India-funded projects in Mauritius, which are aimed at community development and capacity building. These projects span a variety of sectors, including healthcare, sports, and local infrastructure, with a total investment of around INR 7 crore.
One of the significant inaugurations will be the new Civil Services College building, which was built with a USD 4.75 million investment. This project, alongside the Area Health Centre and 20 other community projects, underscores India’s support in strengthening governance and institutional capacity in Mauritius.
Economic Ties and Trade Cooperation
India continues to be one of the largest trading partners of Mauritius. Mauritius ranks as the second-largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into India, after Singapore, making the economic cooperation between the two countries vital. In February 2021, both nations signed a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA) after years of negotiations, which was followed by the signing of an MoU in January 2022 to implement 96 community development projects across Mauritius.
Previously, India extended a Special Economic Package to Mauritius, providing USD 353 million for key projects like the Metro Express, the Supreme Court building, and the New ENT Hospital. Further, in 2017, India granted a USD 500 million Line of Credit for the financing of projects including solar power plants, police academies, and incinerators.
PM Modi’s visit to Mauritius marks another milestone in strengthening the India-Mauritius strategic partnership and fostering a relationship built on shared values and mutual growth.
