Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the long-awaited Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line, significantly enhancing the city’s public transport infrastructure and taking the Namma Metro network length to 96 km. The event marked a major milestone in the city’s mobility improvement plans, long awaited by daily commuters struggling with traffic congestion.
The Yellow Line, which had faced multiple delays due to land acquisition and funding challenges, will connect Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road in South Bengaluru to Bommasandra in the southern outskirts. This corridor is expected to reduce travel times drastically for thousands of residents and industrial workers in the Electronics City and Bommasandra areas. Officials expect a sharp drop in traffic congestion along the busy Hosur Road corridor once the line becomes fully operational.
In addition to the Metro expansion, PM Modi also flagged off the Vande Bharat Express between Bengaluru and Belagavi. This high-speed, semi-bullet train will cut travel time between the two cities, providing modern, comfortable, and efficient rail connectivity. The service is expected to attract both business travellers and tourists, further boosting economic activity in the region.
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for Namma Metro’s Phase 3, which aims to add over 44 km of new routes in Bengaluru, further strengthening the public transport network. This phase will focus on improving connectivity to IT hubs, residential clusters, and peripheral business areas.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi stressed the importance of integrated transport systems for urban development, stating that infrastructure expansion is key to making Indian cities more liveable and economically vibrant. He highlighted how projects like the Yellow Line and Phase 3 are aligned with the government's broader mission to modernise urban transport and reduce pollution caused by excessive vehicular traffic.
The inauguration drew enthusiastic participation from local residents, who see this as a long-overdue step towards easing Bengaluru’s infamous traffic woes. Business leaders in the region also welcomed the launch, predicting improved workforce mobility and reduced logistic bottlenecks for industries in Electronics City and surrounding areas.
The new Yellow Line stations will include modern amenities such as digital ticketing, escalators, elevators, and better safety measures. Metro authorities have also promised last-mile connectivity solutions through feeder buses, e-rickshaws, and cycling tracks near stations to encourage more commuters to shift from personal vehicles to public transport.
While the launch of the Yellow Line is being celebrated, transport experts have pointed out that timely completion of Phase 3 will be crucial to ensure that the metro network reaches under-served areas in the city. With Bengaluru's population continuing to grow rapidly, planners stress the need for an aggressive expansion strategy to prevent public transport from being overwhelmed.
With the launch of the Yellow Line, the Bengaluru Metro has taken another step towards becoming a robust urban transit backbone for India’s tech capital. If execution of the upcoming phases remains on track, Bengaluru could soon match other global cities in terms of metro connectivity and commuter convenience.
The day’s events reflect a broad vision for integrated transport in Karnataka, with Metro, high-speed trains, and road projects working in tandem to enhance the state’s infrastructure. For the people of Bengaluru and Belagavi, these developments signal faster, cleaner, and more reliable travel in the years to come.
