On August 15, 2025, during India’s 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a landmark announcement regarding India’s entry into the semiconductor manufacturing sector. Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, Modi revealed that the first Made-in-India semiconductor chip will be launched by the end of this year. He emphasized that the government is working on semiconductors in “Mission Mode”, aiming to position India as a key player in the global technology supply chain.

Highlighting India’s past missed opportunities, Modi noted that the concept of semiconductor manufacturing was first discussed 50–60 years ago but was never implemented, causing India to lose valuable decades. Today, the country is taking decisive steps to overcome this historical delay.

Currently, six semiconductor units are operational, and the government has approved four new units, including projects backed by US tech giants Intel and Lockheed Martin, with a total investment of ₹4,594 crore. These plants will be set up in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Punjab, significantly boosting manufacturing capacity and creating high-skilled employment opportunities. Modi stated that this initiative will firmly establish India in the global semiconductor supply chain.

In addition to the semiconductor announcement, Modi unveiled the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana, a ₹1 lakh crore employment initiative expected to create jobs for approximately 3.5 crore youth across India.

The Prime Minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to economic reforms, announcing that the next-generation GST reforms will be implemented this Diwali, aimed at reducing the tax burden for businesses, traders, and MSMEs.

Modi termed the 21st century as a technology-driven era and highlighted India’s focus on self-reliance, innovation, and industrial growth. The combined announcements of semiconductor initiatives, mega employment schemes, and GST reforms demonstrate India’s ambition to strengthen its economic, technological, and social framework, paving the way for sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
