On July 26, 2024, India commemorates the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, a significant day marking the country's victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War. This milestone was honored with a solemn tribute by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the Drass War Memorial to lay a floral wreath in memory of the brave officers and soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

The Kargil War, which concluded on July 26, 1999, saw the Indian Army’s successful culmination of Operation Vijay after nearly three months of intense fighting on the icy heights of Kargil in Ladakh. The victory is celebrated annually as Kargil Vijay Diwas to pay homage to the valor and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought against the invading Pakistani forces.

In his address, Prime Minister Modi reflected on the profound significance of this day. He stated that the sacrifices made by the soldiers are immortal and expressed unwavering determination to thwart any attempts by adversaries to disrupt India's progress. Modi emphasized that Pakistan has failed in its past attempts to undermine India, and despite its continued efforts through terrorism and proxy war, India remains resolute in its response.

The Prime Minister took this opportunity to assure that India's resolve against terrorism will not waver. Speaking from a location where "the masters of terror" could hear him, Modi conveyed a strong message that their nefarious designs would never succeed. He reassured that the Indian Army is prepared to tackle terrorism with full force and that India will overcome every challenge to ensure the development of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Modi also highlighted significant developments in these regions, noting that August 5 will mark five years since the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. He described the region’s progress, including infrastructure development and the rapid growth of the tourism sector. Notably, a cinema hall has reopened in Kashmir after decades, and a Tazia procession was held in Srinagar for the first time in 35 years.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister announced that the Indian Army has listed 5,000 items that will be manufactured domestically, reducing reliance on imports. This move aligns with the broader goal of enhancing self-reliance and economic growth within the country.

The commemoration of Kargil Vijay Diwas serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the Indian soldiers and a testament to India’s ongoing commitment to national security and regional development. As the nation reflects on the past and looks toward the future, the legacy of the Kargil war continues to inspire and fortify India’s resolve in the face of adversity.
