In a solemn acknowledgment of the tragic turn of events in Bengaluru, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday described the stampede incident near the M Chinnaswamy Stadium as “absolutely heartrending.” The unfortunate incident occurred during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) victory parade, a grand public event organized to celebrate the team’s first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) title win.

The mishap has shaken the entire nation, leaving eleven people dead and over fifty injured, as the crowd spiralled out of control, leading to chaos and panic. Eyewitnesses reported a sudden stampede-like situation, with fans collapsing, many unconscious, and people being trampled during the mass surge outside and around the stadium premises.

PM Modi Reacts with Grief and Solidarity

Taking to social media, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) posted an official statement quoting Prime Minister Modi, who conveyed deep condolences to the bereaved families and wished for a swift recovery for those injured:

“The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery.”

His remarks came as visuals from the scene showed emergency services rushing to help victims, with several unconscious individuals receiving CPR from bystanders while ambulances transported the injured to nearby hospitals.

Chaos Erupts During RCB Victory Parade

The Chinnaswamy Stadium, with an official capacity of around 35,000, was surrounded by a sea of nearly 2 to 3 lakh people, far exceeding its crowd-handling capabilities. As excitement surged among RCB fans celebrating the franchise’s historic IPL win, thousands thronged the area early in the day, causing an uncontrollable influx.

As per eyewitness accounts, fans jostled for space and entry, pushing and shoving each other. When access gates were breached or overwhelmed, panic spread, leading to a stampede-like scenario. Police forces, though deployed, were overwhelmed by the sheer number of attendees, and had to resort to mild force to restore order.

Visuals captured during the incident showed bodies being lifted onto stretchers, with some receiving first-aid from volunteers and emergency responders. The stampede occurred just ahead of the felicitation ceremony organized by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), meant to honour the RCB team.

Administrative Response: Lack of Preparedness Acknowledged

Following the incident, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge acknowledged lapses in planning and coordination. Addressing the media, Kharge admitted that the event could have been better managed and that it was “a failure that could have been avoided.”

“This could have been prevented with more effective planning and coordination. The stadium's capacity is 35,000, but nearly 2 to 3 lakh people had gathered in the surrounding area,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar expressed sorrow over the incident and announced that all government events scheduled for the following day would be postponed as a mark of respect for the victims. Shivakumar, however, defended the government, claiming they had not anticipated such a massive turnout, while also accusing the BJP of politicising the tragedy.

Karnataka BJP Demands Judicial Inquiry

The Karnataka unit of the BJP, led by its state chief BY Vijayendra, took a strong stance against the Congress-led state government, demanding a judicial probe into the incident. He criticised the Siddaramaiah administration for holding a mass public event without adequate security arrangements or crowd management infrastructure.

“First of all, the state government, without any preparedness, should not have organised this today. If you had seen the World Cup match celebration in Mumbai, there was detailed preparation. With lakhs celebrating last night in Bengaluru, today’s function should have been postponed,” he told reporters.

Vijayendra further claimed that the state police were under pressure and ill-equipped to deal with the crowd volume, resulting in avoidable deaths. He termed the event’s execution as a classic case of negligence.

Political Blame Game Intensifies

The incident has sparked a full-blown political controversy, with Union Minister G Kishan Reddy and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy joining the chorus of criticism. Reddy termed the incident as a “complete failure” of the Karnataka administration, while Kumaraswamy called out Deputy CM DK Shivakumar’s “impatience, immaturity, and irresponsibility” for hastily organizing the event.

In response, both Kharge and Shivakumar hit back, accusing the BJP of trying to gain political mileage from a human tragedy, and insisted that an impartial probe would reveal the truth.

Several on-ground witnesses described the scenes of panic and helplessness, with many attendees unaware of what triggered the stampede. Bystanders were seen breaking into panic as the surge escalated, with families getting separated, children crying, and elders collapsing in the rush.

A local resident said, “We came to celebrate, but never imagined this would happen. There was no water, no shade, and people were pushing from all sides. It became unbearable.”

Another fan, who lost a friend in the chaos, broke down in front of the media, saying: “He just wanted to see his favourite team. Now he's gone forever. This is not celebration — this is a nightmare.”

As investigations begin and political leaders trade barbs, the larger question remains — why was an event of such scale approved without proper planning? Analysts and urban planners have pointed to a lack of risk assessment, poor crowd control mechanisms, and over-reliance on police without support from disaster response units.

Experts are now urging for standardised protocols for mass gatherings, especially those that follow high-emotion events like sports victories. The incident has also raised questions over KSCA’s role in not anticipating or mitigating the logistical risk, given that they were the primary organisers.
