In a landmark statement during his meeting with US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that India is ready to take back its citizens living illegally in the United States while emphasizing the need to dismantle the human trafficking ecosystem. Addressing a joint press conference, PM Modi stated that those who have been verified as Indian citizens but are residing in the US illegally do not have a legal right to stay and that India is prepared to bring them back.
India’s Stand on Illegal Immigration and Human Trafficking
Speaking about the larger issue, PM Modi noted that many of these illegal immigrants are from ordinary families who are misled by human traffickers. He stressed that the bigger fight is against the organized system of human trafficking rather than just addressing illegal immigration on a case-by-case basis.
"It should be the joint effort of India and the US to dismantle this entire system of human trafficking. We are confident that President Trump will fully cooperate with India in this fight," PM Modi said.
His remarks come in the wake of over 100 Indian nationals being deported from the US in a military aircraft under restrictive conditions, an issue that sparked political debate in India. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had earlier addressed concerns regarding the conditions under which these individuals were repatriated, reaffirming that India was in constant communication with US authorities on the matter.
Strengthening People-to-People Ties: New Indian Consulates in the US
PM Modi also announced that India would soon be opening two new consulates in Los Angeles and Boston, further strengthening the Indian diaspora’s presence in the US. He highlighted the Indian community’s crucial role in deepening India-US ties and fostering stronger economic and cultural relationships between the two nations.
"The Indian community living in the US is a key bridge between our two nations. To enhance our people-to-people ties, we will soon open new consulates in Los Angeles and Boston," he said.
In addition to this, he invited US universities to establish offshore campuses in India, a move aimed at boosting educational collaboration and increasing student exchanges.
US Agrees to Extradite 26/11 Attack Accused Tahawwur Rana
Another significant development during the visit was President Trump’s confirmation that the US will extradite Tahawwur Rana, the accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. PM Modi thanked President Trump for his cooperation in India’s fight against terrorism, stating that both nations share a common goal of eliminating terrorism.
"India and America have been working together to combat terrorism. I appreciate President Trump’s decision to extradite the criminal responsible for the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. Our courts will ensure that justice is served," PM Modi said.
India’s Commitment to Indo-Pacific Security and Economic Growth
PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing the role of the Quad partnership (India, the US, Japan, and Australia). He stated that India would be hosting the upcoming Quad summit, where new avenues for cooperation would be explored among member nations.
In addition, PM Modi highlighted India’s active participation in initiatives such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) and the I2U2 group (India, Israel, UAE, and the US), which focus on building trade infrastructure and economic connectivity.
"India and America’s partnership is built on democratic values. Together, we will work towards peace, stability, and economic growth in the Indo-Pacific. Quad will play a crucial role, and India will host the next summit to expand cooperation," he said.
President Trump echoed similar sentiments, reaffirming the US’s commitment to the Quad partnership, stating that strengthening ties with India is key to maintaining security in the Indo-Pacific region.
Strengthening US-India Strategic Ties: Invitation for President Trump to Visit India
PM Modi extended a formal invitation to President Trump to visit India, recalling the historic visit of 2020, during which both nations pledged to expand their strategic and economic collaboration.
"The people of India fondly remember your visit in 2020. On behalf of 140 crore Indians, I invite you to visit India again," PM Modi said.
With a focus on bilateral cooperation, defense preparedness, and economic collaboration, this visit sets a strong foundation for the next phase of the India-US partnership. As India continues to position itself as a key player in global trade and security, the cooperation between the two nations is expected to yield long-term benefits.
