Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated India’s world champion and Olympic gold medallist javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra, for a spectacular feat — breaching the 90-metre mark at the Doha Diamond League 2025, the season’s opening event.

In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote,
“A spectacular feat! Congratulations to Neeraj Chopra for breaching the 90 m mark at Doha Diamond League 2025 and achieving his personal best throw. This is the outcome of his relentless dedication, discipline and passion. India is elated and proud.”

Neeraj Chopra threw a personal best and new national record of 90.23 metres, surpassing his previous record of 89.94 metres set at the Stockholm Diamond League 2022. His remarkable achievement made him the first Indian athlete ever to cross the 90-metre mark in javelin throw, a milestone long anticipated and celebrated across the country.

Despite this stellar performance, Neeraj finished second, just behind Germany’s Julian Weber, who clinched the top spot with a throw of 91.06 metres in the final round.

Neeraj’s rise in athletics has been marked by a steady progression of achievements:

Gold medals at the South Asian and World U20 Championships in 2016
Silver at the Asian U20 Championships in 2016
Gold at the 2017 Asian Championships

His breakthrough came at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, where he became the first Indian javelin thrower to win gold, recording a throw of 86.47 metres.
