India’s semiconductor journey has achieved a historic milestone with the presentation of the first set of Made-in-India chips to Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi at SEMICON India 2025. The chips were handed over by Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, who hailed the moment as a symbol of national pride, thanking the Prime Minister for his farsighted vision, strong will, and decisive leadership in driving India towards self-reliance in technology.
India Semiconductor Mission: From Vision to Reality
The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), launched in December 2021, has transformed from approvals to production in just three and a half years. This rapid progress underscores India’s determination to emerge as a global semiconductor hub. The mission is built on trust, respect for intellectual property rights, and strong global partnerships, ensuring that India becomes a competitive and credible player in the semiconductor supply chain.
At SEMICON India 2025, the Prime Minister was presented with the first chips from the pilot line, symbolizing the beginning of India’s journey in commercial chip manufacturing.
Deep Tech Alliance Announced
In a major announcement, Mr. Vaishnaw unveiled the formation of a Deep Tech Alliance, backed by nearly Rs. 8,803 crore (US$ 1 billion). Initially, the Alliance will focus on semiconductors but will gradually expand into clean energy, biotechnology, quantum technologies, and space exploration. This initiative highlights India’s intention to become a leader not just in chip production but across critical emerging technologies.
Industry and Academia Partnerships
The event witnessed the signing of 12 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with leading industry players and academic institutions. These collaborations are aimed at boosting chip design, manufacturing, skills development, and innovation.
A key highlight was the presentation of 20 semiconductor chips designed by Indian students to Prime Minister Modi. With 78 universities already using advanced semiconductor design tools, India is actively nurturing the next generation of innovators and engineers to sustain long-term growth in this critical sector.
Startups and Global Partnerships
India’s semiconductor ecosystem is also witnessing a startup surge, with more than 28 startups successfully progressing from projects to products. The presence of global technology giants such as ASML, Applied Materials, Lam Research, and Merck at the event reinforced the growing international confidence in India’s semiconductor ambitions.
Modernisation of Semiconductor Laboratory
The government is also investing in modernizing the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali, a move that will further strengthen India’s research and development capabilities in chip design and production. Additionally, the upcoming India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0 will expand its focus to include fabrication plants, outsourced assembly and testing units, equipment, and materials manufacturing.
Competitive Edge in Global Market
Mr. Vaishnaw highlighted India’s cost advantage in semiconductor production, with manufacturing already 15–30% more cost-effective than global benchmarks. This gives India a natural edge in attracting both domestic and foreign investment in the semiconductor industry.
Towards Self-Reliance and Global Leadership
The unveiling of India’s first chips reflects the success of Prime Minister Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). The country is not only aiming to reduce its dependency on imported chips but also striving to emerge as a global leader in semiconductor technology.
The semiconductor industry is critical to powering electronics, automobiles, telecommunications, clean energy, and advanced defence systems. By strengthening its foothold in this domain, India is positioning itself as a key driver of global technological growth.
Looking Ahead
The presentation of the first Made-in-India chips to the Prime Minister marks the beginning of a new era for India’s technology sector. With strong government support, industry-academia partnerships, a thriving startup ecosystem, and global collaborations, India is well on its way to becoming a semiconductor powerhouse.
The announcement of the Deep Tech Alliance further ensures that India’s progress will not be confined to semiconductors alone but will expand into next-generation technologies such as quantum computing, biotechnology, and clean energy.
This milestone at SEMICON India 2025 is not just about producing chips; it is about building a resilient, innovative, and future-ready India, capable of leading the world in technology.
