  • PM Modi at G7 Outreach Session in Canada called for strict global action against terrorism and highlighted voices of Global South

  • Modi said India had productive talks with G7 leaders on shared global challenges and sustainable development aspirations

  • French President Emmanuel Macron announced the next G7 leaders summit will be hosted at Evian in the French Alps

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the G7 Outreach Session in Canada on Tuesday, urging the global community to unite against terrorism and to take strict action against those who promote or support it. His remarks underscored India’s longstanding and uncompromising stand against terrorism, calling for collective international resolve to counter the threat.

The G7 Summit, held this year at Kananaskis, Canada, comes against a backdrop of heightened geopolitical instability, especially the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict and the trade tensions sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff regime.

PM Modi calls for solidarity with Global South

While reaffirming India’s position on terrorism, PM Modi also brought attention to the priorities and concerns of the Global South. He stressed the need for inclusive global governance, and noted that nations from the Global South must not be sidelined in decision-making on matters of global importance.

In his address, the Prime Minister said,
The world must not ignore the concerns of the Global South. They represent the voice of the majority of the world population.

He added that the world today needs collective leadership and a rules-based international order that treats all nations with fairness.

Productive talks with global leaders

PM Modi also stated that he had productive exchanges with several G7 leaders during the summit. These conversations, he said, focused on climate action, sustainable development, resilient global supply chains, and technological innovation.

India, which is currently the world’s fifth-largest economy, has consistently been invited to the Outreach sessions of G7 Summits in recent years. This reflects the growing recognition of India’s geopolitical influence and economic weight in global affairs.

Donald Trump exits summit amid Middle East crisis

The summit, however, was marked by dramatic developments involving U.S. President Donald Trump, who departed the G7 summit a day earlier than scheduled. Trump’s early exit was prompted by the escalating military conflict between Israel and Iran, with the U.S. President calling for the immediate evacuation of Tehran.

His unexpected departure was seen as a sign of shifting U.S. priorities toward direct military and diplomatic intervention in West Asia. Trump had originally planned bilateral meetings with several G7 leaders, including France’s President Macron and UK’s Prime Minister, but many of those engagements were either cancelled or cut short.

Key issues on the G7 agenda

Besides terrorism and the Global South, the G7 Summit in Canada focused on a wide range of pressing global issues including:

  • The Russia-Ukraine conflict, with leaders expressing concern over prolonged hostilities and the need for diplomacy

  • Energy security and green transition, as the global economy moves toward sustainable alternatives

  • Regulating Artificial Intelligence, particularly in view of AI’s influence on jobs, misinformation, and cybersecurity

  • Trade disruptions and inflation, largely caused by geopolitical crises and protectionist policies

India’s position on many of these issues has been collaborative and forward-looking, with the Prime Minister pushing for technology-sharing, capacity-building, and south-south cooperation.

Next G7 summit in French Alps

In a notable announcement, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that the next G7 Leaders Summit will be held in Evian, a scenic location in the French Alps. Macron said France intends to make the 2026 G7 Summit a platform for renewed multilateralism, with a focus on digital governance, climate finance, and public health infrastructure.

India’s increasing global role

India’s consistent participation in G7 summits, despite not being a member, is symbolic of its rising global influence. In his speech, PM Modi emphasised that India will continue to stand for peace, development, and democratic values.

He noted that India’s presidency of the G20 and its successful hosting of multiple global forums have demonstrated its capability to lead on global issues.

India’s involvement in the G7 Outreach aligns with its strategy to be a bridge between the developed world and emerging economies, especially in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

G7 composition and relevance

The Group of Seven (G7) is an informal club of the world’s most advanced economies: France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada, and the European Union. It meets annually to deliberate on international economic and political challenges, and invites select countries to join its Outreach Sessions.

While the G7 does not issue binding resolutions, its collective voice significantly shapes global financial systems, climate goals, and diplomatic stances on pressing global issues.

Conclusion

PM Modi’s call for united action against terrorism, combined with his advocacy for the Global South, highlights India’s expanding role on the world stage. As geopolitical fault lines deepen, India’s ability to act as a voice of reason and inclusivity in forums like the G7 will be closely watched.

With the next G7 summit planned for Evian, France, and global crises still unfolding, the coming months will be critical in shaping the next phase of international cooperation.
