On September 14, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a high-profile campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, addressing a significant rally in Doda. This visit is notable as it marks the first time a Prime Minister has visited Doda in the past 42 years. The rally was marked by tight security arrangements, reflecting the importance of this campaign stop.

Modi’s Criticism of Opposition

During his speech, PM Modi launched a vigorous critique of the Congress, PDP (People's Democratic Party), and National Conference (NC), accusing these parties of fostering conditions that led to separatism and terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. He highlighted the historical neglect of the region under their rule, accusing them of creating an environment that benefitted "the enemies of the nation" and hampered the emergence of new leadership.

"The election is between the youths of J-K and three families. On one side are three families and the other side are the youths of J-K," Modi declared, referencing the political families of Congress, NC, and PDP. He claimed that these families prepared the ground for separatism and terrorism, leading to widespread suffering and unrest in the region.

Changing Situation in Jammu and Kashmir

Modi referred to past remarks by former Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, who had expressed fear about visiting Lal Chowk due to security concerns. He emphasized that the situation has drastically changed, asserting that "terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir is now breathing its last." Modi commended the progress made over the last decade, noting that previously destructive actions like stone-pelting are now being replaced by constructive efforts to build the region.

Critique of the Opposition's Manifesto

The Prime Minister also criticized the opposition’s stance on Article 370, suggesting that a return to its provisions would lead to a reversal of the region's recent gains. He argued that implementing the opposition's promises would result in a return to instability, with repeated instances of violence and disruption.

In his address, Modi stressed that the BJP is committed to the development of Jammu and Kashmir and ensuring the rights of all residents, regardless of their religion or background. He pledged that only the BJP could restore and reinforce statehood to the region, presenting his party as the true advocate for the region's progress.

Jammu's BJP Stronghold

The Jammu region has been a stronghold for the BJP, with the party winning all 25 seats from this region in the 2014 Assembly elections. In the upcoming elections, the BJP is contesting all 43 Assembly seats in the Jammu division. The upcoming polls will be conducted in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the counting of votes set for October 8, 2024. This election is the first since the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, marking a significant political shift in Jammu and Kashmir.
