In a symbolic gesture of respect and devotion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a ceremonial chadar to be offered at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah during the 813th Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, the revered Sufi saint. This annual commemoration marks the death anniversary of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz, a revered figure in Sufi mysticism, and attracts millions of devotees from across India and the world. The chadar will be offered at the Mazar-e-Akhdas, the tomb of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, in a continuation of PM Modi’s devotional participation since 2014, making this the 11th consecutive year that he has sent the offering as a mark of reverence.

The ceremonial chadar, an offering to the saint’s shrine, is seen as a symbol of devotion, respect, and gratitude by the devotees. During the Urs, such offerings are regarded as acts of worship and are believed to bring blessings and fulfill vows. For centuries, this act of offering the chadar has been an important spiritual tradition among devotees, with many believing that it brings divine favor and relief from difficulties.

This year, the 813th Urs began on December 28, 2024, and the festivities, which span over several days, will include rituals, ceremonies, and prayers. The festival will continue through the Urs period, with pilgrims from all walks of life gathering at the shrine. The event is also marked by spiritual gatherings, qawwalis, and devotional songs, creating an atmosphere of peace and reverence.

In the previous year, Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Jamal Siddiqui had presented the chadar on behalf of PM Modi during the 812th Urs. This year, the ceremonial chadar will be presented by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and BJP Minority Front president Jamal Siddiqui. Their presence at the shrine reflects the inclusive values upheld by Sufi saints like Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, who promoted love, humanity, and spiritual unity.

The Ajmer Sharif Dargah, dedicated to the Sufi saint, remains one of the most revered spiritual places in India. It draws devotees seeking blessings for their spiritual and worldly needs, fostering a sense of unity and devotion. Through his consistent participation in such spiritual practices, PM Modi highlights his respect for India's diverse spiritual traditions and his commitment to fostering peace and unity among the people.
