Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (June 17, 2025), described India-Canada relations as extremely important, stating that both countries should work together for win-win cooperation across sectors. The statement came during his bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada.
This meeting marks PM Modi’s first visit to Canada since 2015 and also his first formal interaction with PM Carney, who took office in March 2025, succeeding former PM Justin Trudeau. PM Modi’s participation in the summit was at the invitation of Mr. Carney, symbolising a thaw in India-Canada diplomatic relations, which had hit rock bottom last year.
In his remarks, PM Modi congratulated Carney on his election victory and said, “I am sure under your leadership, we will be able to work together in a positive way and take the India-Canada relationship forward.”
He emphasised, “I believe that India-Canada relations are extremely important, and India and Canada should work together and achieve win-win cooperation in several areas.”
Modi highlighted that Canadian companies have invested heavily in India, while Indian investments in Canada are also significant. “We both stand for democratic values. Together, we can strengthen democracy and humanity,” he said, adding, “If we work together and optimally utilise all our resources, we can work for the welfare of the entire humanity.”
On social media platform X, PM Modi posted:
“Had an excellent meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Complimented him and the Canadian Government for successfully hosting the G7 Summit. India and Canada are connected by a strong belief in democracy, freedom and rule of law.”
He added that sectors like trade, energy, space, clean energy, critical minerals and fertilisers offer immense potential for cooperation.
Carney Signals Reset in Ties
In his opening remarks, PM Carney said, “It is a great honour to host PM Modi at the G7. India’s participation in the G7 since 2018 highlights your country’s global importance and your leadership on issues like energy security, the energy transition, artificial intelligence, and the fight against terrorism and transnational repression.”
“It is my great honour to have you here,” Carney said, reinforcing his government’s intent to rebuild ties with New Delhi.
This comes after a period of deep diplomatic strain following the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in 2023. Trudeau’s government had accused Indian officials of involvement, leading to a serious diplomatic standoff. India had recalled its high commissioner and expelled Canadian diplomats, with Ottawa responding in kind.
Following Trudeau’s resignation, India had welcomed the opportunity to reset ties, expressing hope that a “foundation of mutual trust and sensitivity” could be restored.
Backchannel Diplomacy & Strategic Signals
In the past few months, Indian and Canadian security officials resumed contact, and discussions to appoint new high commissioners began. PM Modi’s G7 visit, at Carney’s invitation, reflects a deliberate effort to move beyond the crisis.
India's Ministry of External Affairs described both nations as vibrant democracies, stating that the bilateral meeting offered a chance to exchange views and explore pathways to reset the relationship.
During the meeting, economic cooperation also featured prominently. Bilateral trade in goods between the two countries in 2024 stood at $8.6 billion, with India exporting $4.2 billion and importing $4.4 billion worth of goods. Trade in services was valued at $14.3 billion, with India exporting $2.5 billion and importing $11.8 billion in services.
PM Modi also recalled the G20 Summit hosted by India in 2023, and said that New Delhi is committed to furthering those global initiatives via multilateral platforms like the G7.
Strategic Partnership and Common Goals
The bilateral ties between India and Canada were elevated to a strategic partnership during Modi’s last visit in 2015. Tuesday’s meeting aimed to rekindle that momentum, with both leaders reaffirming commitment to mutual goals in democracy, sustainable development, and global peace.
PM Modi stressed that the meeting was an opportunity to serve the global public good, a vision long held by India in international forums. “It has always been India’s intention to promote global goods,” he said.
Carney echoed this, saying Canada values India’s leadership in addressing issues like climate change, digital transformation, and global governance reforms.
Conclusion
The meeting between PM Modi and PM Carney during the G7 Summit reflects a positive shift in India-Canada relations after a turbulent phase. Both leaders signalled intent to rebuild trust and strengthen strategic ties, while laying the groundwork for collaboration across trade, energy, clean technology, and global governance.
