The Summit of the Future aims to address global challenges and opportunities, with key leaders and documents expected.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the UN Summit of the Future on September 23, 2024, but will not be participating in the high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), according to the latest schedule released by the United Nations. The revised list confirms that Modi will not speak at the UNGA session, a change from the provisional list issued earlier in July, which had originally listed him to address the General Debate on September 26.

Changes to UNGA Schedule

The updated schedule now features External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar as the representative for India, who is expected to speak at the UNGA General Debate on September 28. This shift in schedule comes after Modi's participation in the Quad Summit on September 21 in Delaware, where he will meet with US President Joe Biden, and counterparts from Australia and Japan.

Following the Quad Summit, PM Modi will participate in a major diaspora event, ‘Modi and US, Progress Together’, on September 22 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island. This event is expected to attract a large audience, with over 25,000 ticket applications from the Indian diaspora.

Summit of the Future: Goals and Expectations

The Summit of the Future, scheduled for September 23, aims to guide the future trajectory of the UN, focusing on accelerating efforts to meet international commitments and addressing emerging global challenges. The summit is expected to adopt the Pact of the Future, which includes a Global Digital Compact addressing both the risks and opportunities presented by technological advancements. Modi is listed as the 35th of 72 speakers at the morning session of the summit, which begins around noon local time (9:30 PM IST).

According to the UN, the summit will address how global cooperation can be enhanced to tackle agreed goals and emerging threats. The statement emphasized that effective global cooperation is crucial for survival but challenging in an era of mistrust and outdated structures.

UNGA High-Level Meeting and Hosts

The high-level session of the UNGA will commence on September 24 with Brazil opening the debate, followed by US President Joe Biden, who will deliver his final address of his current term. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will present his report before the General Debate begins, with the president of the 79th UNGA session also addressing the assembly.

Notably, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will be absent from both the UNGA session and the Summit of the Future. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy will represent their countries at the summit in their absence.

Jaishankar is anticipated to hold bilateral meetings with various leaders and participate in group discussions during the UNGA session.
