Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone for a significant project that will further enhance the education infrastructure in Delhi. On January 3, the Prime Minister will inaugurate a new college affiliated with Delhi University, named after the renowned freedom fighter Veer Savarkar. This momentous event will also mark the beginning of the establishment of two new Delhi University campuses in East and West Delhi.
The Veer Savarkar College, which has been approved by the Delhi University Executive Council in 2021, will be built at a projected cost of Rs 140 crore. The project is expected to greatly contribute to Delhi University's growing stature as a premier educational institution in India. The college's naming honors the legacy of Veer Savarkar, a leader known for his contributions to India's freedom struggle. Along with this, the university will also inaugurate two new campuses aimed at expanding its footprint across the capital.
New Campuses in East and West Delhi
The proposed East Campus, to be located in Surajmal Vihar, will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 373 crore, while the West Campus in Dwarka will be established at an estimated cost of Rs 107 crore. These new campuses are part of a larger vision to improve access to quality higher education and create better infrastructure for Delhi University's growing student population. The East and West campuses will provide opportunities for students from different parts of the city, reducing overcrowding at the existing DU facilities.
In addition to the Veer Savarkar College, Delhi University has also proposed the creation of another college named after Sushma Swaraj, the late BJP leader and former External Affairs Minister. The names of these new colleges were carefully selected from a list of prominent figures, including Swami Vivekananda, Vallabhbhai Patel, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to name a few. The Delhi University Executive Council has given the green light for these developments, demonstrating the institution’s commitment to honoring notable figures who have shaped India’s history and political landscape.
Authority and Land Allocations
The Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University, Yogesh Singh, has been entrusted with the responsibility of selecting the names for the new colleges. According to the university’s plans, two parcels of land have already been allocated for the establishment of these new institutions in Najafgarh and Fatehpur Beri. These new developments are expected to not only expand DU's educational reach but also contribute to the economic development of the surrounding areas.
The foundation laying ceremony is highly anticipated by the university and the surrounding community, as it marks a significant step in Delhi University’s expansion. The ceremony is expected to draw a large crowd of education enthusiasts, political leaders, and citizens alike. However, confirmation of the event is still awaited from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
With this ambitious move, Delhi University will bolster its position as one of the leading educational hubs in India. The expansion plans are designed to accommodate the growing demand for higher education and provide a diverse range of opportunities for students across the capital.
