Ahmedabad, March 3, 2025 – On the occasion of World Wildlife Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi went on a lion safari at the Gir Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat. The visit marks a significant step in reinforcing India's commitment to wildlife conservation and biodiversity protection.
PM Modi stayed at Sinh Sadan, a state forest department guest house in Sasan, before embarking on the safari on Monday morning. He was accompanied by ministers and senior forest officials during the tour of the only natural habitat of Asiatic lions in the world.
PM Modi’s Message on World Wildlife Day
Reaffirming India's commitment to wildlife conservation, PM Modi shared a message on X (formerly Twitter):

PM Modi Chairs National Board for Wildlife Meeting
At Sasan Gir, PM Modi chaired the seventh meeting of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL). The NBWL consists of 47 members, including:
- The Chief of Army Staff
- State representatives
- NGOs working in wildlife conservation
- Chief Wildlife Wardens and Secretaries from various states
During the meeting, Modi discussed policy decisions and new conservation initiatives, emphasizing the protection of endangered species and sustainable forest management.

Project Lion: A ₹2,900 Crore Conservation Initiative
The central government has sanctioned ₹2,900 crore under Project Lion, an initiative focused on the conservation of Asiatic lions. These majestic animals currently inhabit nearly 30,000 square kilometers across 53 talukas in 9 districts of Gujarat.
As part of Project Lion, new facilities have been developed, including:
- A National Referral Centre for Wildlife in Junagadh, spread over 20.24 hectares.
- A high-tech wildlife monitoring center in Sasan for real-time tracking of Gir’s lion population.
- A state-of-the-art veterinary hospital to provide specialized medical care for wildlife.
PM Modi’s Visit to Vantara Animal Rescue Centre
On Sunday, before his visit to Gir, PM Modi also visited Vantara, an animal rescue, conservation, and rehabilitation center at the Reliance Jamnagar refinery complex.
Vantara provides:
- Sanctuary and rehabilitation for animals rescued from illegal trade and mistreatment.
- Medical care and rehabilitation services for injured wildlife.
- Advanced conservation research and breeding programs for endangered species.
