The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) is setting new records in India's renewable energy sector, with 10 lakh homes powered by rooftop solar panels as of March 10, 2025. Launched by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, this ambitious initiative is transforming India's energy landscape by making solar power more accessible and affordable.
With 47.3 lakh applications already received, the government has disbursed Rs. 4,770 crore (US$ 546.96 million) in subsidies to 6.13 lakh beneficiaries, enabling more households to transition to clean and cost-free solar energy. The scheme also provides collateral-free loans up to Rs. 2 lakh (US$ 2,296.50) at a subsidized 6.75% interest rate through 12 Public Sector Banks, with 3.10 lakh applications received, 1.58 lakh sanctioned, and 1.28 lakh disbursed.
A streamlined 15-day subsidy transfer process ensures rapid adoption, while many beneficiaries report zero electricity bills, reinforcing the program's impact. Additionally, each solar installation offsets carbon emissions equivalent to planting 100 trees, positioning the scheme as a major environmental milestone.
Top Performing States and Government Targets
Among the states leading the initiative, Gujarat has emerged as the top contributor with 3.51 lakh solar-powered homes (18.14%), followed by:
- Maharashtra – 1.92 lakh homes (22.79%)
- Uttar Pradesh – 75,602 homes (8.69%)
- Kerala – 65,423 homes (7.73%)
- Rajasthan – 26,622 homes (3.14%)
Additionally, Chandigarh and Daman & Diu have achieved 100% of their government rooftop solar targets, demonstrating the scheme’s success in urban and coastal regions.
The government aims to expand the initiative significantly, targeting 1 crore solar-powered homes by FY27. This large-scale adoption will add 30 GW of rooftop solar capacity, generate 1,000 billion units of clean energy over the next 25 years, and reduce CO2 emissions by 720 million tonnes, aligning with India's climate commitments and sustainable development goals.
Economic and Employment Impact
The PM Surya Ghar scheme is not only a renewable energy push but also a major economic driver. It is expected to:
- Save the government Rs. 75,000 crore (US$ 8.60 billion) annually in electricity costs.
- Create 17 lakh new jobs in the solar energy sector, boosting employment across manufacturing, installation, and maintenance.
- Promote domestic manufacturing under Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India, reducing dependency on imported solar components.
With the demand for rooftop solar adoption in India surging, the scheme is ensuring access to affordable, clean energy for millions of households, while also making India a global leader in solar power.
The Road Ahead for India’s Solar Future
As the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative, PM Surya Ghar is redefining India’s renewable energy strategy. The government’s proactive approach—offering subsidies, easy loans, and policy support—is ensuring that solar energy becomes a mainstream household solution.
With continued adoption and strong policy support, India’s transition to a solar-powered future looks more promising than ever. As more households shift to solar energy, the initiative will play a pivotal role in achieving energy independence, reducing carbon footprints, and fostering sustainable development.
